Gluten is evil?

No offense but every single condition today by Internet Drs are all food related and gluten is evil.  I'm not saying that food isn't powerful because it is...it makes us who we are to a certain extent.  But id be willing to bet my mortgage that if we did a randomized, controlled, study and 100 men strictly ate a anti inflammatory diet and the other 100 didn't that the differences in this disease would not reach any statistical significance in curvature, plaque size, etc..  Just my opinion.  You can't just eliminate inflammation from the human body...there a reason why our bodies produce inflammation.  Granted too much inflammation is not good.  Sorry I know I may be sounding negative on this subject and I think it's great if people eat better but I dealt with an ex and the gluten is evil with our kids for years and my kids are more messed up then ever psychologically.

"Can be beneficial" does not equal "is caused by" or "will cure". 5 minutes of research on pubmed would show you just how bad excessive inflammation can be for the body, exacerbating countless conditions/diseases. Another 10 minutes would show you that it is proven that specific dietary changes can decrease inflammation.

Add another 30 minutes and you'd have at least a passing understanding of the variety of conditions which studies have shown gluten to be involved in, and the severity of those gluten exacerbated conditions.

You obviously have an emotional connection to this particular subject due to things in your past, so it might be best if you just avoided discussing it here as posts such as yours offer zero useful input.
This is an emotionally destructive condition, we all have it, let's be nice to each other.

Freemason - I LOVE IT!  Ha ha!  About time somebody protested a fad.  Every couple of years it's something: anorexia, triphosphate hypoglyceride sonofabitch, et al.  Currently it's Devil Gluten.  Of course just because something's faddish doesn't mean it's not true.  But true or not, the anti-gluten craze is a fad.  Last night I was munching on a bag of cheddar popcorn that proclaimed itself "GLUTEN FREE" in big caps.  I thought to myself, "So what?"  I checked the nutrition panel and saw it also had no vitamin C, but there was no proclamation, "VITAMIN C FREE!"  For six years I designed lab information systems for nutrition research scientists.  Those guys pay no attention to fads; they just look at the science, and what we know is always changing.  This year gluten is the bugaboo.  Poor Mr. Gluten.

I agree many are choosing 'gluten free' due to dietary preferences. But I do need to make the point that there are some people who have a very real allergy to Gluten...... look up Celiac Disease.

Count me as one of those people with a gluten sensitivity. Celiac is only one of many gluten-induced issues. Crohn's, Colitis, Irritable Bowel are also gluten-induced and there is a definitive link between Celiac and Diabetes. So, gluten isn't just a fad.

nemo

Show me a mainstream medical source that declares "Crohn's, Colitis, Irritable Bowel are also gluten-induced."

Oh, were it only that simple.

My wife suffers from Coeliac disease, as we call it. It's no joke! It can make you violently ill.

Nemo,

Below is a link from the Celiac Disease Foundation which states Crohn's is found in Celiac patients. According to Dr. Joel Wallach Crohn's is a more advanced stage of damage to the intestinal tract. Now you many not think Dr. Wallach is mainstream, but he has a 1200 page book in the Smithsonian called "Diseases of Exotic Animals" Coming from a man that has performed literally 10's of thousands of autopsies in both humans and animals and oversaw $25 million in research in the 1970, I don't think it gets any more mainstream than Dr. Wallach unless mainstream only includes pharmaceuticals and not nutrition. Listen to his Serial Killers lecture if you want to understand the link between the two.

Hi guys,

I waited to see what was going to be said about the Celiac issue. I have Celiac disease have been diagnosed for the last 7 yrs or so. I have it because I am diabetic, have been since age 2 and Celiac is an unfortunate things that can happen because the system cant absorb foods as it should. YOU DO NOT have to be diabetic to have Celiac.

Celiac goes un diagnosed for years for many people, they live with the symptoms of nausea, severe diarrhea and abdominal pain treating just those symptoms never treating the Celiac and continuing to eat gluten that aggravates the Celiac. If you have Celiac you MUST avoid gluten (most grain product)

The severe diarrhea can cause Crohns/Colitis symptoms, Crohns/Colitis are inflammation of the bowel, severe diarrhea is going to cause this and going years un diagnosed with Celiac will cause the Crohn/Colitis.

Celiac must be diagnosed with an EGD (a scope procedure that goes down your through to view the villi, small hairs) in the stomach to see if they are standing and active OR lying flat and basically useless.

Also, everyone with Crohns/Colitis DOES NOT have Celiac, as I said those are caused by inflammation of the bowel that can be caused by many thing.

Celiac and Chrons is miserable. There are true Gluten allergies. However..I take my kids to an allergy group and they do some tests and say "your kids have Gluten sensitivity!" "You should eliminate all gluten, Soy, Corn, Sugar, dairy, from their diet". Wtf. They are 8 and 3! What the hell is left to eat! So my kids sit around knawing on carrots and tree bark...what a miserable and completely unrealistic way to live.  I went in and had myself tested and guess what? They said same thing to me.  I'm 45 and I've never had a single issue with wheat, dairy, soy, corn, sugar ect...No doubt there are true food allergies and they can be miserable but IMO too many internet practitioners are blaming certain foods for all ailments without any real scientific evidence.

Free,

I know it can be a pain as I have non-Celiac gluten sensitivity too. According to Dr. Walllach in excess of 50% of the population has a gluten sensitivity. However, gluten free doesn't mean bad food. There is plenty of good gluten free stuff out there and hey, Steak has always been gluten free.
