Dorsal Blues

I am 55 and live in Seattle Washington.
About 6 months ago having sex with my girlfriend, she was on top and I think she came off, came down on and bent my penis.  There was some pain for a few months and it did not seem to get hard on the last third (somewhat "hinged") This lasted a while, with intercourse being painful and difficult as the end of my penis was not getting hard.  Gradually the hardness improved however, also the "bend" appeared (an upwards bend i am guessing about 30 degrees or so).  A month ago I went to a urologist and got diagnosis of peyronies (I already pretty much knew and expected it).  He is suggesting verapamil injections (6 sessions and see how it is after that).  So far I have not been prescribed any oral medication other than Viagra (which I take before sex - as opposed to small dose daily which I have seen advised). I have my first verapamil session scheduled in a couple of days; I am having second thoughts about the starting the treatment right away.  On one hand I am worried about calcification and disease progression and on the other hand I am worried about doing something that will make things worse.  I am also wondering if I should be considering waiting until Xiaflex is approved.  I am not sure about my doctors "expertise" in this area as far as the injections go and I am not sure how to broach the subject without offending him.  I am thinking I should at least postpone the treatment and gather more information.  I am not very happy with my penis right now.  It still works, however my desire for sexual activity is greatly diminished.  It is strange I have lived my entire life and now this.

Please advise.

Welcome to the forum Dorsal Blues.

Have you read MUST READ BEFORE YOU POST - Information for new members - Peyronies Society Forums

If you did you know about our recommendation of seking less invasive treatment before more invasive treatments.  You would also know about the importance of pentox.

Personally I would not go for VI but if I did, it would be to an excellent doctor that has a very good track record with VI, and it would be only AFTER conservative treatments failed.

Dorsal Blues, I support what Hawk stated and one more thing: Please do not use the "wait and see" technique in this situation. You must take action immediately, especially as Hawk said, using Pentox. Read the link Hawk posted and get aggressive about your condition since waiting can make it worse.

Thank you for the replies.  I am seeing my urologist friday and see about getting the recommended prescriptions.  Totally makes sense to try the oral medications.  I was referring to the more aggressive treatments in regards to the "wait and see" comment.  Not sure how long calcification takes to develop and how long before more aggressive treatments are no longer an option.  I definately would not consider surgery.

Dorsal blues,

I had a similar injury. My GF at the time was on top and she bent me with her pelvic bone. You can look up my first post on this site for more details. My injury occurred in Dec of 2011 and it's been a long, difficult road for me. For the 1st 8 months after my injury I couldn't have inner course thru penetration. It was debilitating & crushing for me as i'm sure it is for you as well. what was once a source of pride/confidence with women had turned into something that was drastically different and barely usable for sex. I have seen some improvement, but don't think I'm getting back the inch or more in length I lost or the full function I had prior to my injury. I had a minor curve develop near the base which has since gone away. I probably lost 50% of my normal function after the injury and have since regained about 20%.

Do you have any hardened tissue where it was bent? Either lumps or a ring of tissue that never loosens up? where did it bend? It is also possible that something was torn internally, which would give you a weak erection that no longer stands up.

I'd highly suggest finding a good urologist who understands peyronies near you. If you can't find one near you, you may want to travel. I'd do this soon. Waiting is not a good idea. there are definitely things you could be doing that may help your situation before it gets worse.

I think another thing that can help you is trying to keep your head up. This is very important. If you are feeling depressed (i was for almost a year) you need to fight it by any means you can. if you stopped working out or exercising, try to push yourself to get back into it. Do things that will take your mind off your condition. I know first hand that peyronies & penile deformities aren't an easy thing to ignore or accept, but an injury like yours and peyronies can wreck your life if you let it, which won't help you a bit.

Hope this helps. Feel free to send me a personal message if you think I can offer any more info to you.

Many are waiting on Xiaflex, but we have no guarantee that this will receive FDA approval. So there is a risk you are waiting on something that may or may not arrive. I believe the delivery mechanism (injection) is the same as for Verapamil. So the risk of any injury due to the injections would be very similar.

I would not hesitate to ask your doctor how many VI's he does on average per week, and if anyone has had any problems or side effects as a result.

Yes MtnSurf it has been difficult.  My GF is pretty sexually demanding and I am not sure she really understands the problem even though I have tried to "educate" her on it.  I would sure like to see some improvement.  Other members are pushing towards oral treatments over VI.  My insurance will cover it which is enticing.  Just not sure about my urologist; he "seems" knowledgeable.  I am just not sure; I am going to question him about his track record and experiance when I see him next.

Just make sure you thoroughly cover the information links on Pentox.  Go prepared, and discuss it.  If he dismisses Dr. Lue and Pentox my question is how could he possibly be knowledgeable?  Dr. Lue is a leading Penile surgeon happy to cut or poke anyone's penis that he thinks needs it.

I may have missed it but I don't even see where you have a significant bend.  You always have the option to go more aggressive but to pull the trigger on that before trying less invasive treatments simple does not compute with me.  Years ago we did a survey on VI and almost as many got worse as got better.  I would love to just have someone calmly and rationally explain why they would recommend VI prior to trying Pentox, oral supplements, and other non-invasive treatments.  The only rational I can think of is that they think the other treatments are so ineffective they are synonymous with doing nothing and that clearly is not the case.
