Hello everyone, this is my story. I'm 59 years old and about 4 years ago I noticed a slight bend in my penis. I went and saw a doctor and he said I had Peyronies and gave me a prescription for some pills. I don't remember the name but they were horse pills and I took at least 10 a day. My bend over the last couple of years has been getting worse and I found this forum and looked up doctors in the Chicago area and found Dr. Levine and made an appointment in March to see him. I have no problem getting a firm erection and it doesn't hurt when I make love to my wife. Dr. Levine did an ultrasound and after the examination he said I have about a 60-degree bend to the left with the plaque about an inch up from the base of my penis. He explained to me the disease and my options.  Dr. Levine put me on Pentox (400 mg) one pill three times a day and L-Citrulline (750mg) two capsules twice a day. I just finished my sixth injection of Verapamil with no change in my bend it's still about 60 degrees :(. I also do traction and wear it between 8-10 hours, 6 days a week. On my final appointment with Dr. Levine we discussed my next options. Plication or Excision and Grafting surgery. He said with my bend I could decide on either one. I decided on the Excision and Grafting procedure but I know he has the final decision when he starts the operation which procedure is the best for me. All the information was sent to my insurance company and they turned the procedure down. I called the insurance company and I was told it was a cosmetic surgery and they wouldn't cover it. I don't think it's cosmetic. I decided to look at my policy a little closer and found I could dispute their decision. I called the insurance company and got the department name, extension and fax number to resend the dr.'s findings and recommendations to. I called the Dr.'s office and gave them the information and they said they would call my insurance company and make sure they resend all the information they requested. Hopefully the insurance company will decide in my favor, if not I will have to figure out a different way to proceed. I'll get a different insurance policy that will cover this procedure.

I like Dr. Levine. He is a very caring dr. that listens to you and your concerns and explains everything where you can understand it.

I heard back from my insurance company (GEHA) and they said the operation was not medically necessary so they won't pay for it. Now it's time to come up with plan B. I'm getting medical insurance with another company and wait a little bit before I try and use it.

You have to fight they decision, with the support of a good Peyronies specialist.

Update, both the insurance companies I have said the operation was cosmetic and they wouldn't pay for it. I called and talked to Dr. Levine's office. They called me back later on and told me Dr. Levine would write a letter to the insurance companies and explain why it was medically necessary. I have heard back from one insurance company so far and they have agreed to pay for the procedure.  I am having my operation on the 31st. of December. Dr. Levine and I have discussed the different types of procedures and I have decided on the Excision and Grafting procedure.
