I was lucky to see a great Urologist today

Because of this board I found the name of a Urologist in San Francisco, Dr. Lue.  He is at UCSF and is a top notch specialist in this disease.  When I was first diagnosed by my PCP I was sent to a NP Urology and told that the meds didn't work and the side effects were bad and that I should just wait to see if it goes away.  Dr. Lue told me today, "I sure wish you could have gotten to me a year ago" which is when my PCP diagnosed me.  I am so full of anger right now.  I have to find the bright side that I did find Dr. Lue and he gave me a prescription for Pentox and said to come back in three months to make sure the calcification has stopped.  He did a ultra-sound to determine the severity of the calcification.  He wants to at least make sure that stops and then we will go from there.  He told it is a good thing I am seeing him because if it isn't stopped now it will get worse based on what he saw.  I now have a 45-50 upward curvature and an hour glass effect and turtle effect as well...I hope it can be reversed some anyway.  I also hear that the worse side of effect of the pentox is with the digestive system.  Thanks all who have posted to this board to help us out...

JWS,

Dr. Lue is probably one of, if not the top Uro in the nation for Peyronie's. Easily top ten in the world. I saw him a few years ago and he was great.

Pentox does have some digestive side effects and can make you feel jittery if you take it with too much caffeine. Always take it with meals and you should be fine. Don't break the pills either as they are timed release and that ruins the effect. There are also positive side effects to pentox: 1. I was doing a lot of distance running while on pentox and I could recover very quickly from long runs, probably due to the increased oxygen. 2. Pentox increases sperm motility so if you are trying to have kids, great!

Good luck!

Just a quick bit of advice for limiting digestion problems with Pentox. Try to spread the tablets throughout the day, so the effects are spread evenly and also avoid taking Pentox on an empty stomach. I find it is best tolerated when taken just after a full meal. Occasional nausea or indigestion is likely but should be far more manageable if you do it this way.

JWS- how many mg of pentox did he put you on?

I'm going to see Dr. Lue on Friday so I'm hoping he can give me some hope as well, especially for the ED issue.

I'm taking Pentox at the dose that Lue recommended in a study and that is, 2,400 mg/day in 3 doses.

I usually take it with food but it doesn't seem to matter because it no longer bothers my stomach.

Also, I agree with Skjaldborg, Pentox is great for helping with physical fitness. It seems to improve my weight lifting and vascularity.

Egghead:  He prescribed 400mg. 3/day after each meal.  Matt & Skjaldborg: I also think it will be good for me because I have peripheral arterial disease (hardening of the arteries mostly in my lower extremities) and Hepatitis C which has scar tissue on the liver and I think it will be helpful for both of those things.  I too have ED but my understanding is that he will begin the pentox and see me back and then continue a further plan...mostly wants to stop the calcification now before it gets any worse...he said if I let it go chances are I end up with a shrunken lead pipe (not encouraging huh?)

I really am so grateful I was able to find him and it is totally because of this website.  I still am angry with the health care that diagnosed me and still did nothing.  I also know that if I try to talk to them the egos will get in the way and it seems a waste of time.  I will see how my treatment progresses and then I will have a heart to heart with the PCP who diagnosed it and the NP of Urology who "treated" me.

We're all in the same boat when it came to getting the medical community to treat our Peyronie's with great urgency. Treating Peyronie's with a wait and see attitude is like treating a heart attack with a glass of water. Neither situation will likely end up well.

This is the first thread that i've seen that points out that Pentox helps w/ athletic activity.  Very true! My should would ache when i would lift weights and it no longer does and my 4 mile runs are a little easier now but the recovery time is great!

WestWilly, this is the main reason why I plan to take Pentox for the rest of my life. :)

I've attached an interesting paper written by Patrick Arnold, a famous performance enhancing drug expert and pioneer, that discusses the performance-enhancing aspects of Trental.

Thanks pizzaman, I've read that before but couldn't find a copy of it.

My only concern with Pentox is the possible suppression of IGF-1. I need to get that level checked to make sure I'm losing out on the benefit of IGF-1.

I think I am splitting these last 3 posts into their own topic then moving it to Oral Treatments.

Hawk,  The initial post REALLY should have been in the Urologists and other Doctors topic since Pentox is really tangential and not the focus of the post.  From there it just scattered in every direction.  It became one of those forum administrators mini nightmares.  Good luck at untangling it!  - George

;D I was thinking this was the Urologist board and was going to move the last few posts.  I guess they stay and the rest goes.
