If you have a bogus or old email address in your forum profile it could actually compromise your privacy rather than enhancing your privacy. Let me explain:
In your profile under Account Settings every user has an email address listed. If that email address is incorrect then you MUST go to to Profile > Personal Messaging
then look to the right where it says Notify by email every time you receive a personal message:
There you must select NEVER
If you don't, then everytime someone sends you a pm the server will attempt to send you an email. That email will fail and a failure notice will be sent to the forum administrator (me) with the PM attached. So, either have a good email in your profile or set email notification to NEVER under Personal Messaging
As a footnote, you can always put a good email address in your profile. Even though you get email notifications your email is kept private by default and no one other than the administrator can see it unless you check the box that says Allow users to email me
