Title: Ketosis and bad breath.
Post by: Arthur on October 16, 2023, 08:45:24 AM
Hey, brothers!

I intermittent fast most of the days of the week but other people have noticed that I get horrible breath because of it.

Bad breath is a sign of ketosis so it's not a surprise to me but are there any "hacks" to get rid of it? Any other advice?

Thanks!

It is normal and everyone gets it. You also get a bit of a weird metallic/nasty taste in the mouth.

Best thing to do is to use a good mouthwash designed for bad breath. We have one in sweden that's called SB12 and I use it when fasting and it does the trick. The key ingredient is zink which helps greatly with bad breath.

Try see if you can find a mouthwash with zink in it! Also important to clean/scrape the tongue!

Thanks Sonic, good info, I'll try that.

Having diabetes, my wife hasn't noticed my breath being bad from a keto diet this past year. Diabetes actually causes sweet breath - I'm told.

I will let you know that regular use of mouthwash has been proven to actually kill 94% of the bacteria in our mouths that help produce nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is used in our bodies in a lot of physiological processes. Erections being one of them and also hypertension etc... Here is an interesting article regarding it -->https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7567004/

Thanks for this interesting read. It does however state antiseptic mouthwash which is different from regular ones. Usually those regular mouthwash designed for breath do not have chlorhexidine in them which is the ingredient that study was based on.

I fast regularly and I just brush my teeth 3 times a day and I'm good. Be sure you're brushing your tongue and flossing daily as well.
