For the last 6 months I have been on pentox for peyronies.  I have read a couple comments about it reducing the effectiveness of the immune system.  First off is this even true?

Second, if it is true, is it safe to get the seasonal flu shot?  I was planning on getting the flu shot this week but what to know this information first.

Thanks everyone

Tim468

There is no data to support that concern. Not enough people on Pentox who have been given any vaccine I bet. But it is not a problem in all likelihood.

Ok thanks.  Looks like I will get the flu shot then.

newguy

I agree with Tim. Pentox is a safe drug and any impact on the immune system, in my view, shouldn't create a problem in relation to a seasonal shot. At least I've heard nothing that would make me feel concerned about it.

Not that I'd suggest people take an excessive number of blood thinners. It all depends on your current supplements etc, but I found this article quite interesting so thought I'd post it. I've been unable to locate the abstract in question:

QuoteScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2009) — On November 15, 2009, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) researcher Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., the first Sir Richard Doll Research Professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science will present at the American Heart Association's Annual Scientific Sessions meeting in Orlando, FL, the first data in humans to show that all doses of aspirin used in clinical practice increase nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is released from the blood vessel wall and may decrease the development and progression of plaques leading to heart attacks and strokes.

The abstract, titled "Usual Doses of Aspirin Increase Nitric Acid Formation in Humans" is published in the November 2009 issue of Circulation, the official journal of the American Heart Association.

FAU researchers conducted a randomized trial in patients at high risk of a first heart attack or stroke and assigned them to different doses of aspirin for 12 weeks. All doses produced highly significant beneficial effects on two important and well documented markers of nitric oxide formation.

"While the ability of aspirin to decrease the clumping of blood platelets is sufficient to explain why the drug decreases heart attacks and strokes, these data suggest a new and novel mechanism," said Hennekens.

Co-author and project director of the trial and affiliate clinical instructor of clinical science and medical education, Wendy Schneider, MSN, RN, said, "We are proposing new and longer term research to test whether this hypothesis has clinical or public health relevance."

The American Heart Association recommends aspirin use for patients who've had a myocardial infarction (heart attack), unstable angina, ischemic stroke (caused by blood clot) or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs or "little strokes"), if not contraindicated. This recommendation is based on sound evidence from clinical trials showing that aspirin helps prevent the recurrence of such events as heart attack, hospitalization for recurrent angina, second strokes, etc. (secondary prevention). Studies show aspirin also helps prevent these events from occurring in people at high risk (primary prevention).

Gentlemen,

I am currently taking Flowmax, Toprol ER, Pentox and Simvastatin for an enlarged prostate, Peyronies and a heart condition.  I also take a low dose aspirin daily and a small dose of Viagra 3 or 4 times a week.  I have recently been experiencing some weakness and shortness of breath.  I have tried to research negative interactions between these drugs on the internet, but haven't had much luck.  The Simvastatin is the latest drug added to my list and I'm wondering if I'm pushing the limits of blood thinning drugs.

Any feedback from your research or experience would be greatly appreciated.

I am surprised know one has had a comment on this post as drug interaction has been a big problem with me.I believe toprol Er is a form of metoprolol. The bad  effects of this drug got worse as time went on .It interacts with lisinoprol, metforman I'm not sure about simvistatin I take that also.I can say that metoprolol has some nasty side effects. I'm not going into it as I'm tired of talking about it lately.

You can find answers on the net but yes those side effects are associated with toprol Er and probably the statin.I stopped taking alot of my meds to see what has bad effects on me.

OK, some of us know about the side effects of drugs and what they can do for ones phyche in using them. Toprol and Toprol ER are the brand name for the drug. Metoprolol is the generic form of toprol. I use metoprolol all the time and the side effects are it makes me drowsy and sleepy all day long. Can't even watch a TV program most of the time due going to dropping off to sleep. The wife has to wake me often so that I can keep up with the theme of the shows!!! Even miss a good portion of my favorite ball games too.

My heart doc says that I need to keep taking it to control the heart condition since getting the bypasses and stents surgeries.

I also have two stents one over the other in the left ventricle I believe after having a heart attack in 2,000.All I know it affected the pace of my beat and being young and invincable and stupid I stopped seeing my cardiologist. Who was the Guy who actually did the surgery on me.Maybe he is the man I need to see.

The VA. Doctor I had at the time prescribed me atenolol and lisinopro.Said I was young and my body could take it he was straight out of the Mayo clinic where he did his internship. My next doc said he did not want me to work anymore I thought that strange since I was only thirty four.

Several doctors later and taking five different blood pressure medicines along with ten other pills for other diseases and ailments. All I know  i get really sick and tired and beaten. After seeing four other doctors to find relief from metopropol or toprolol and finding all the drug interactions and an adverse side effects it is enough to drive one insane.

I was finally getting somewhere with my civillian clinic when they discharged me that is another story.stay tuned.

Bad advice never works for any good!! Have had a few docs that did practically the same things for me. Just hang in there and you will make it.

Drugs have some side effects and make you lazy because its effect remains for sometimes and it needs to be taken and definitely it must have some way to get rid of this.

Well no doubt Dammien Flemming that drugs have side effects and are not good for health. We should avoid drugs because drugs work only for a while and make us weak and lazy.

I was prescribed yesterday by my uro "Harnal" to relax the urethra and improve the urine flow. (0.2mg two hour after Pentox)
I read by the Internet that is a safe medication, used usually for enlarged prostate with very low chance of side effects.
Have somebody experience or knowledge regarding this drug?
Any answer will be appreciated! I will wait starting with the drug until getting some answers.

You have written:

Is out of topic but:
I had a major cardiac occurrence back in 1995 at the age of 48. I had a balloon to enlarge one of the main veins to the hearth. Had no ED until two years ago.
The doctor (professor) that made it to me is my close friend, he put me on 100mg daily aspirin that I never miss.
In addition he told me to keep always in my pocket a few small pills that one should put bellow the tang if feel strong chest pressure or other major signs of a cardiac occurrence. Today is coming also as a small bottle of spray with less side effects. He says he knows many people that this small pill saved they life while waiting for the doctor.

Well i was on "baby" aspirin also, as my cardiologist (also close friend) told us there was a study saying this could avoid heart stroke. After 6 months he took all his friends off again, because he had misinterpreted the study. It seems that low dose aspirin works, but only if you have already had a heart attack. it helps avoiding the second. If you have never had one before, it doesnt change anything, just give you stomach problems. As to the pills/spray its nitro-glycerin. this is also recomended if you have had heart problems before. I just remembered reading that if you take nitro components, there are some other pills you shouldn't take.. (was it cialis or viagra or something else... cant remember because as I was not taking nitro, it did not matter in my case.. just keep that in mind)

This is the latest published in the UK Daily Telegraph about taking low-dose aspirin.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9156230/Aspirin-a-day-cuts-cancer-risk-after-just-three-years.html

It seems to me the 'experts' change their minds every couple of months or so.....

I read the article you have posted the link. Is a new research that shows clear advantages of taking low dose aspirin. As I know from reading by the Internet, a big percentage of the people in the US are taking low dose aspirin. Lets follow the subject and see if they will come up with something new.
Luciano
I am not taking the baby aspirin that is 80mg, I am taking 100mg aspirin that is made specially as blood thinner with slow release. Have many brands, Cardioaspirin, Coraspin etc'. Some doctors, including seniors are advising to take this low dose for everyone that is in a risk category.
I had never stomach problem with this low dose, even that I am allergic to aspirin (500mg). It makes my heart bit irregularly and very strong, I can see every bit on my chest.
Regarding the pills/spray I suppose you are right it is nitroglycerin, I forget the name. I am not taking it regularly, never take it, just keeping in my pocket for emergency. My father (passed away in 1990 at age of 68) had many years hearth problems and used it many times successfully until the first aid come. My mother (passed away last year at the age of 89) used it successfully in the same way.
Again, my doctor told me that it saves lives. The new version (spray) have no side effects, the pills makes strong headache.

that "baby" aspirin story is 10 years old, so probably new studies have been made. We were taking this one because it is specially "coated" and only delivers once in the digestive tract, so it cant upset your stomach on long term use.

as to the nitro with viagra I suppose it is perfectly safe for you as dont use it regularly. Just found the text about side effects and "other medication" published by pfizer:
QuoteDo not take Viagra if you are also using a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems, including nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, Minitran, Deponit, Transderm-Nitro), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket), or recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers").
Generally speaking I think people should read those texts if they are considering taking the PAV coctail.
I agree that taking once, in case of emergency will very probably not do any harm.

I have a question that you may have an answer:
I read long time ago that Viagra may cause heart attack and some cases people passed away.
If someone takes 100mg Viagra and have a heart attack the nitro will worse the situation or will help as it should usually?
I am taking PAV cocktail and sometime I am changing the low dose Viagra (approx. 17mg) with 50mg or 100mg, the only way I can have a normal and sustainable erection. Before my Peyronie's I have used Viagra very rarely, the 25mg or the 50mg.

If somebody else have knowledge in the subject, please jump in.

actually I dont know.
I just wrote what is written in the notice that comes with viagra

But common sense lets me think this (Remember I DONT KNOW, just supposing):
Low dose should not do any harm.
If not sexually arouse, viagra does not have any affect. so i suppose no problem.

But some people get side effects like red face, heat, headache etc.. so I think 100 mg should not be used with nitro.

But I also read somewhere that lots of dangers of viagra (and others) come from the fact that as you can go on for hours (or at least for long time). Imagine you had a pill for running (like viagra for sex). You take it and you run a marathon easy. your body would still suffer the stress of running 40km, you wouldnt survive it without the pill, actually you wouldnt be able to run more than 10 km without it.
so IMO with viagra (and others) the major risk is overdoing it and not knowing when to stop.

Again, I am not a doctor. Asking one that knows would be my advice.

Thank you for the answer. Your way of thinking sound logic. May only problem is that very rarely I can have a normal (more or less) erection without Viagra.
The symptoms you had mention I had them in the past, now with low dose don't have at all and with 50mg very mild.

Interesting article bellow regarding "Low Dose Aspirin"

QuoteIn addition, the little white pills combat chronic inflammation
So it is also a Peyronies medication?  :) It didn't work for me for Peyronies as I am taking 100mg daily from August 1995. :(

There are multiple pathways for inflammation in the body.  Aspirin does not block all of those pathways.  In fact most illnesses are based on some sort of inflammation.  If aspirin were effective in blocking all pathways, it would be a universal cure.  - George
