under the: Best initial treatments / things you can do immediately section, its listed to DO NOT USE TOBACCO PRODUCTS. I smoke. I would like to quit. i am just addicted to the nicotine. Does anyone know of safe alternative to quiting? Would Nicodemus CQ be good to use for quiting altogether and eventually stop the Nicodemus as well?

MattFoley

I can tell you that 100% in my case, smoking cigarettes is what cause my Peyronie's. If you're addicted, try Chantix or use vaperpens to taper down.

I was a heavy smoker (3+ packs per day) and I quit. I didn't use any nicotine replacement.
You just need a serious reason (not from the anti-smoking advertisements) and commitment. My daughter 7, I am almost 69 and would like to see her growing up. This is a serious reason to quit :)
By the way, I was in a 5 years brake from smoking when the Peyronies stuck so in my case the smoking was not the reason.

Allen Carr's easy way to stop smoking. Smoked cigs and dipped for three years and this book saved me. In fact I am sure I would still be a smoker without it. Give it a try let me know what you think.

If you must smoke do a tobacco pipe or cigars and do not inhale. Inhaling is what causes the lack of blood flow to your dick. But id highly recommend quitting altogether, I'm much happier without it.

briot83, I just told you what to do. Look at my previous post. You can use Chantix or use a vaperpen to get the nicotine without the tar. But Chantix is prescribed by your doctor and is a powerful tool to quit smoking.

Why would smoking be bad, aside from nicotine being a vasoconstrictor? Nicotine is anti-inflammatory and I would think it could help Peyronie's, at least in the acute phase.

james1947

If not for other reason, while smoking the quantity of the oxygen inhaled is reduced because you are inhaling also smoke that have much less oxygen than pure air.

Look, one of the main CAUSES of Peyronie's is an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body and penis, causing more tgf-beta and therefore fibrosis. The research shows it clearly. Smoking directly creates ROS massively in your entire body and penis. Quit right away.

To even doubt this shows a lack of understanding of this disease. Increased ROS is part of the process of Peyronie's regardless of if caused by injury or genetics.

But this only goes for smoking then, and not use of nicotine in itself (like gums or patches)?

Paolo

Jay, be careful please, nicotine (drug) exposure causes thousands of mutations in a cell's DNA, we all need a crutch but this isn't a good one whatsoever  :o

@Paolo: source?
While nicotine is a tumor growth promoter, itself it isn't carcinogenic:

Evidence about long-term nicotine or NRT use is relatively scarce, and concerns have been raised that long-term NRT use may increase cancer risk, in part owing to endogenous formation of carcinogens such as N′-nitrosonornicotine (NNN).52 However, studies carried out in experimental animals largely indicate that nicotine alone is not carcinogenic.53 In vitro and in vivo studies in animals do, however, suggest that nicotine can have tumour-promoting effects through activation of intracellular signalling pathways. Such effects include cell proliferation, enhanced angiogenesis and decreased apoptosis.37,49 However, it is important to note that many studies in this area have used nicotine at higher doses than those achieved in heavy smokers.54 In vitro research suggests that nicotine can have a negative impact on the function of some cells within the cardiovascular system,55 and adverse effects on glucose metabolism.56 However, robust evidence on the safety of long-term nicotine use in humans from the 5-year Lung Health Study, in which participants were actively encouraged to use NRT for several months and many continued to consume NRT for a much longer period, demonstrates no association between sustained NRT use and the occurrence of cancer (lung, gastrointestinal or any cancer) or cardiovascular disease.57,58 In addition, a recent clinical trial comparing 8, 24 and 52 weeks of NRT treatment found that treatment duration was not associated with any adverse effects, further supporting the safety of long-term NRT use.59

Tychy, See below link regarding smoking and DNA damage

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3713237/

To quote in this study;
Cigarette smoke is considered one of the most powerful environmental modifiers of DNA methylation.
The specific mechanisms of how cigarette smoke may alter DNA methylation are becoming better understood.
First, cigarette smoke may modulate it through DNA damage and subsequent recruitment of DNMTs. Carcinogens in cigarette smoke, such as arsenic, chromium, formaldehyde, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrosamines can damage DNA by causing double-stranded breaks.

I am not an expert but don't think any sensible person would advocate smoking, or dangers relating to doing so.

Yeah. That's an article about smoking. Smoking is the devil. We don't need to talk about this.

What we need to talk about is nicotine consumption. This be patches, sprays or vaping. Any recent research regarding nicotine replacement therapy, using scientific methods with no or few bias, is telling us that standing at a traffic intersection is worse than, e.g. vaping.

What may be a problem is vasoconstriction. This is similar to the effects of caffeine in magnitude. I'm just fed up with people throwing everything in the same bucket. Nicotine has health benefits for some, if used in sane amounts and without burnt plant matter. I'm not advocating for it, but rather against putting the devil's mark on it.

This is the way people are being held from nicotine replacement therapy, because it's "worse than smoking", "not really stopping smoking" / "cheating". Champix has severe side effects, even leading to suicide.

As a personal anecdote: I'm now smoke free for three years. I'm able to go without NRT, even for longer periods of time with no yearning, but it will make my cognitive and orthostatic conditions worse. I found out I medicated myself with this from some time ago. The only alternative being prescription stimulants similar to cocaine or amphetamines.

Tl;Dr: Don't start consuming nicotine if you don't need to. Stop smoking (carbon monoxide, radioactive plant particles, and about a few thousand chemical compounds), supplement nicotine if it helps you stop smoking.

Paolo

Understood Tychy, take care  :)

Yeah I used Swedish snus and smoked cigarettes for 10 years. Stopped for 5 years cold turkey and just started with snus again a week ago. I started because of the health benefits of nicotine, and the good cognitive effects it gives me.

Honestly I can't find anything bad about nicotine except vasoconstriction and dependency. The benefits outweigh the negatives for me.

Snus is already better than smoking, as I read out of the studies. You will still get potential pesticides and other water solvable compounds to the mucus membranes of the mouth. Also you have a higher risk for chemical gastritis, due to more nicotine irritating the stomach. But that's it.

Have you tried nicotine toothpicks as an alternative? (I know snus users like the ceremony of it ;) )

Noway

there are plenty of guys that smoke like crazy and have perfect erections the health care blames everything on smoking and will use that excuse instead of fixing the problem.

Everybody is different, perhaps some of us are more genetically prone. I used to smoke like a chimney, quit about 5 years ago, best thing I've done.
