While I really admire the content and people on this forum, I had a few suggestions about the layout of the forum that I feel would make reading more convenient and the appearance more pleasing.

1. Superfluous tags on the left pane.
1a.Why not omit the tags like country, gender, offline, and just have three larger icons in the same line that are fairly self explanatory on their own. Maybe show the tag on mouseover, like you do for 'view profile'.
1b. Maybe the posts tag in a separate line of its own could be removed, with just the number of posts written in brackets next to their experience classification on the forum.
Eg: voting member (314)
1c. Clicking on the name takes you to the profile, from where you can directly PM, so why add two new icons like 'view profile' and 'PM' when one of them is completely superfluous and the other, fairly. It's not like PMing is a super frequent operation to merit an icon that avoids the extra click.

2. Report to mod could just become an icon (like a red with a cross) next to the view profile / message icons or maybe somewhere one wouldn't accidentally press.

3a. Titles may be omitted in every reply especially when 99% of titles are just Re:Main subject. In case someone doesn't specify a title, just omit that section and start with the post content.
3b. Reply #123 could maybe occupy the top left of the left pane, or some other easily noticeable spot, so people reply like @123 instead of feeling the need to quote or name people they're replying to.
3c. Date/ time could be placed where you have the report to mod link at present.

4. Maybe get rid of 'logged' or 'quote' buttons since as it is you're averse to have people quote stuff. One can copy paste like:-
@123: "I think I'm Batman" - I'm pretty sure you're not.

5. I think message icons seem to add no value, but YMMV.

Your suggestions may work for computer geeks.  Most of us are not computer geeks.

It was tried several months ago and made things worse. My suggestion is leave it alone.

For me the forum layout works just fine.
Everything is easy and strait forward, not just now, also two years ago when I begin posting.
So why to change?

Amitr,

I appreciate your input even though I am not sure I exactly followed all of your recommendations.  I want to mention a couple of points.  Of thousands of members no one else has considered these things to be a negative issue.  Clearly no feature can satisfy 100% of the people but my impression is that the vast majority like it the way it is.

The next point is that we did not free lance a forum application.  This is a Simple Machines Forum.  The code is written by the Simple Machines personnel.  While we have some leeway with open code to modify it, trying to make all your recommended changes would take an insurmountably amount of coding.  After all that work was done, we would likely have more people dissatisfied than we have now so we consider it a poor use of our limited time and resources.

Hmm.. I understand your concerns about the time and effort the proposed operations would take as well as the risk involved. This was just my two cents.. but I'd also agree that if it ain't broke, why fix it.
