QuoteBTW antibiotics and otc pain meds give me horrible tinnitus.  Like my body screaming "enough already with the damn drugs" !

Yep, antibiotics do it to me as well. Tylenol doesn't but Advil and aspirin will.

From everything I have read, and been told by the medical profession, whether you suffer from high cholesterol or not is largely dependant on your genetic makeup. If you are prone to it, you must be very careful what you eat, and maybe your doctor will prescribe statins.

For example, my brother has always been fit and healthy. Never smoked, doesn't eat crap, and was an active sportsman well into his 40's. he ended up with an emergency quadruple bypass. I, on the other hand have led, until the last few years, a far more dissolute lifestyle. However, my cholesterol levels are always low to mid range. My heart is in good shape and I enjoy relatively good health, except for this damn disease that we all suffer from. Not fair, I know, but that's the way it goes.

I haven't compared what Dr. McDougall's point of view says that is pro or con with our goals.  However, to learn about many of the different ideologies of various diets this is a very good video to watch.  His ideas are somewhat different than what is being suggested in this thread https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srkd-irmrC0

My idea of what to eat or which diet to concentrate on is simply to try to follow one which fits your current needs and goals.  It appears that there are many pros and cons to every diet.  What I want is to influence my body to do what it needs to do to fix whatever is broke...  I'm not currently interested in weight loss or getting big anything... just in being healthy.

As a side note... what concerns me about Dr. John McDougall???  ... he's selling books....

My dad has had a stroke and bypass operation and he has diabetes.

My mom has had a heart attack and high blood pressure.

My brother has had a heart attack and high blood pressure.

I have high LDL and low HDL and no heart problems but other than Peyronie's, I'm very healthy.

hmmm... the only way I can relate to that is that I'm the tallest in my family, wear the biggest shoes, weigh less than any of them and have enjoyed better health even though I was very sickly as an infant.  The one either genetic or environmental thing that is common to my parents is both of my parents have/had neurodegenerative diseases.  My dad had Parkinson's when he died of a stroke resulting from high blood pressure.  My mom has been in late stages of Alzheimer's for about 5 years after being diagnosed about 10 years ago.... as close to that as I come at this time is a bad case of CRS (can't remember squat),.

Neurodegenerative diseases are not in my family, but a good doctor told me two things in the subject:
1. It may occurs also after 4 or 5 generations that were OK.
2. I don't remember right now, I will ask him tomorrow.

Just a side note here.  Not only do genetics play a role in our cholesterol numbers, but you then have the whole question as to just how bad high cholesterol is and what role it plays in arterial plaque.  My mother had cholesterol consistently over 300.  Her GP had her scared for years that she had bad EKGs and had heart trouble.  I took her to a cardiologist that said her ekg's were normal.  He actually ran a angiogram.  When he came to talk to us he said my mother had the arteries of a 16 year old girl (she was 77 at the time).. I said "well what about her cholesterol"?  He said; "there is a lot more to the puzzle than cholesterol.  My cholesterol was 145 an I had a heart attack at 44 years old "

So there you have it.

We have a MD in town that runs a heavy nutritional consoling practice in addition to being a radiation oncologist.  He gives IV infusions of vitamin C etc.  I have been to lectures where he says cholesterol only  collects on the inside of damaged arteries because it is natures way of trying to repair cracks and other a damage.  He claims high intake of vitamin C results in healthy arteries because it fortifies the collagen and plaque does not form even with very high cholesterol.

Peyronies Disease is far from the only mystery out there  ;)

This is a great article that explains the "puzzle" Hawk mentions, and also details the relationship between cholesterol and inflammation, and how they can both be addressed naturally:

The Truth about High Cholesterol | How to Lower Cholesterol

Chronic inflammation is actually caused by a laundry list of items such as:

Oxidized cholesterol (cholesterol that has gone rancid, such as that from overcooked, scrambled eggs)
Eating lots of sugar and grains
Eating foods cooked at high temperatures
   Eating trans fats
   A sedentary lifestyle
   Smoking
   Emotional stress
When you are in tune with the unknown, the known is peaceful.

Oh well... in that case I've got at least 4 of those reasons to have high cholesterol.  When I went to my GP right after Christmas and had blood labs run that's the first time in my life I've had any negative report of any kind on lab work.  Of course, in the winter my business is slow and I spend a lot of time just playing on the computer, watching movies and just eating left over thanksgiving & Christmas dinner.... probably a lot of near rancid foods....so may actually have 5 out of 6 reasons...combined with smoking and a heck of a lot of emotional stress, a few episodes of depression/anxiety/panic attacks from having bad love life(s) and a few deaths of people close to me.
