Lubricating the Telescoping rods

I find that even though the instructions with my unit say lubrication is not necessary, there is some catch or resistance at times and I I think a lubricant would improve that and just make the action more smooth.

Has anyone experimented with a lubricant on the telescoping rods.  It seems like something with a thicker consistency like a tiny spot of grease or gel would work best but it would have to be penis and metal friendly.
