Urination issues following implant/grafting surgery

I am 10 days post-op, I had a re-grafing and implantation surgery with Dr Levine.  I had a catheter for about 24 hours after the surgery, after they removed it I was able to urinate and they discharged me.  Since then it seems to be getting progressively more difficult to urinate, seems to take 30-60 seconds to start and is uncomfortable.  I have been taking the prescribed antibiotics and I don't have any other signs of infection.  I am going to be calling the Dr this morning but wondered if anyone else had these issues and if it is related to having had a catheter??

I had a follow up with the Dr yesterday.  There is no infection, they are saying my trouble is due to the swelling and inflammation from the work that was done (as noted, I had extensive incision and grafting in addition to placement of the implant).  So I am going to wait it out and hope it gets better soon.

"Hope it gets better"?

Of course, it will get better.  It takes time.  This is not a sprint.  It's a marathon.

My penis is 70% inflated now till I see the doctor in a few days. Peeing is a little difficult and painful. I think it is due to the hardon and the tissues healing/getting adjusted to the new situation.

Remember, in the old days, how peeing was difficult when you have a hardon.

Hey Justaguy, hope you are doing better.  It's been a month since your original post, and hoping for an update on how things progressed.  I am at day 8 since surgery.  Sounds like we had same procedure - excision, grafting (deglove technique), with Titan implant.  I also had a catheter for 24 hours.  Was able to urinate some the day after the procedure, I have not been able to go on my own.  Surgery was Tuesday 10/26, by Thursday they put in an overnight catheter so I could get some actual sleep, and had that removed the next day.  Since then I have ebb self-cathing.  I know i will get there, hoping to hear some encouraging words, this is rough.

Hi JB, yes, i had my surgery on 9/23, cath was removed on 9/24 and I was sent home.  At first it was a real struggle with urination but as the swelling and inflammation resolved it got a lot better.  I am going for my 6 week check up tomorrow and my urination is pretty much back to normal.  I sure hope things get better for you soon.

Thank you, glad to hear it.  I have my 1 week follow up tomorrow, had been hoping to avoid further procedures but I still cannot go.  I was told it's from the swelling, and from slightly enlarged prostate already.  Keeping my fingers crossed

Those going back for an exam and possible inflation and deflation by the surgeon should take a pain pill about 30 minutes before seeing the doctor. (if you have one).  If you don't have one take a couple of Advil.

The first inflation can be rough, especially if another person does it for you.  This is not intended to scare you.  It is not a screamingly painful experience, but it is seldom pleasant, and the residual discomfort can last for an hour, during which you have to walk to your car and travel home.

Thank you Hawk, good info.  I came home around 70% inflated, and Dr took me down some today.  A week from today I go back for my first "lesson"

hello jb999
so I am on my 5 week post op now. I had issues peeing and came home next day with every 6 hour in/out cath. Dr stated bladder spasms so they put me on flowmax and it helped me. Took about a week to get back to normal. I am still on it and I will stay on it until I get through my first 2 weeks of cycling which should start next week.
Hope things get better for you

Thanks Wave.  I am also on Flowmax.  Had a cytoscope yesterday which showed my prostate was inflamed by the surgery, and I need a second surgery to laser it down.  Self-cathing for a week now, hoping I can pee before the surgery!  Glad to hear you are doing better

Bud luck

I didn't know a penis implant surgery could affect the prostate, how do you feel now? How is the implant working for you? How do you feel with the prostate?.

Well, I already had an enlarged prostate but my prior urologist really did nothing about it.  With this surgery Dr tells me the surgery simply exacerbated the issue.  I am 4 weeks post-op tomorrow.  On exactly 3 weeks I urinated for the first time, and have been for a week now.  However, it's not very much and 4 weeks later I am still self- cathing.  Not fun.  Implant recovery is going well, been cycling for a week now, and aside from wishing I could deflate more to be more comfortable in clothes, it's going really well.  I have the laser surgery for prostate schedule for early Jan.  Dr said he wished we had done prostate surgery first, but I was able to pee then, and it didn't seem like such an issue.

You MUST TOTALLY DEFLATE NOW!

Failure to do so means your reservoir capsule is scarring in too small and that is a permanent condition that will cause auto inflation for as long as you have your implant.  You might already be too far along in healing.

I would totally deflate with two hands while laying on my back.  Then snuggly wrap my penis with Coban bandage to prevent the penis from filling and leave it that way except when urinating or bathing, or cycling.  Do it for at least a few days or until it stays deflated on its own.

Thanks Hawk.  Have done better this week.  With the excision with grafting and degloving technique, it's been a little difficult to squeeze as I have been very sore.  Less sore this week, and I've done as you advised, laid down, and stayed that way for a while as and after deflating.  Has helped. Appreciate the advice.

I have been following your posts.
Hawk has great advice.
Don't let the pain prevent you from doing your deflates and inflates. If the pain is too intense ask for pain pills.
All of us have different levels of pain, if you are in pain and it prevents you from doing what you need to do, let the doctor know.
I wish you well and thanks for sharing.

Thanks Step.  I appreciate all advice and comments.  I am only here (implanted) because of this board and how much I was able to learn before seeking out a new urologist (prior uro pretty much dismissed all options except xiaflex).  My pain has actually been low, didn't even use the Vicodin, been fine with Advil.  With the degloving, I've had to be careful with and around the sutures, per dr's instructions.  I came home 80-90% inflated, for two weeks.  Then started cycling, but sutures have just recently stopped bleeding, and are about healed.  This week I have been able to deflate more.  Lying down as Hawk suggested has really helped.  Now when I deflate, I am deflated enough that I'm resting on my pelvis or thigh, which is a real improvement

When I first started inflating/deflating, I was fortunate enough to have a jacuzzi tub in my bath. I would grab a beer, listen to public radio, and did my deflate/inflate. It took my mind off of the pain. My spouse got a big kick out of it.

Hey guys, in case anyone is interested, had my "one month follow up" (tomorrow is 5 weeks since surgery).  My deflation is just fine, amount I am deflating is on target, per dr Karpman.  It's been going better these last few days with my sutures healing like they have, and was feeling good about it.  Tips you guys gave have helped too.  Was good to get confirmation that I am on track with everything
