When I was a BSA Scout Master many years back, I had the greatest bunch of older boys you could ever ask for.  Honestly, I would have faced anything with those guys because they ALWAYS had each other's backs.  They did not even need a leader.  They were all leaders in their own right.

On an overnight hike/camp-out, we misjudged the distance to our first night's camp, and we were losing daylight fast.  Hiking the boulder field with bowling ball-sized boulders on the side of the mountain would be a painfully slow crawl in the dark.  I sent the older boys ahead to set up camp while I nursed the new first-year scouts along.  I explained to the young scouts that the same effort that would get us 100 yards in daylight would only get is 20 yards once it got dark.  We must push for everything we have in the minutes we have left.

One boy who did not grasp the choice before us, complained.
Boy: My feet hurt
Me: I know, that's why we must make it to camp quickly
Boy: But my feet hurt
Me: We have only two choices, hike fast on hurt feet in daylight or stumble and trip on hurt feet 5 times as long in the dark.
Boy: My feet and legs really hurt.
Me: Say it again
Boy: My feet Hurt
Me: Say it again
Boy: (silent)
Me: SAY IT AGAIN!
Boy: (hesitant and quietly) my feet hurt
Me: Say it again
Boy: (silent)
Me: Say it again
Boy: Why?
Me:  Doesn't it help?
Boy: no!
Me: EXACTLY!  Not only doesn't it help one bit.  It is hurting you and your fellow scouts.  Stating the problem over and over only steals the energy needed for a solution.  It's time to hike to our campsite as quickly as we can.

We arrived in camp just as real dark was closing in.  The campfire was going, food was cooking, and tents were pitched.

There are times when we all have to ask ourselves if we are wasting time restating our problem rather than moving on to the solution phase of improving our situation.

Perfect point! Great lesson. Thanks Hawk.
There is a saying in my country that could be roughly translated to "What there is no remedy, it is remedied." (I hope it makes some sense  ;D)
It is a shame that we, good people, have to deal with this sadistic and devilish disease. It is not easy and I often break down and tremble like a little boy. I have no shame admitting this.
But since we have no choice over this matter, we should focus on things that we can. Like what can you do to delay the worsening of the disease. Try some drugs, diets, treatments, VED, traction... whatever. Is it working? Yes, cool! Is it not? Then what? You can mourn over your condition or to deeply value any life you have left and take action to enjoy it the best you can.
This disease wrecked and stole several moments of my life, but at the same time it is teaching me to be a stronger man with much more courage and resolve.
I wish I didn't have to suffer from it to be this resolute, but since I can't change the past, I won't even waste time thinking about it.
