Hi all,

Little bit about myself: I am 53, live in Atlanta, GA and married to my beautiful wife of almost 20 years. I have moderate erections but do use some "assistance" (little blue pill) prescribed by my primary doc. About 1.5 years ago I developed pain and a curve near the mid shaft of my penis. I was dumbfounded as I did not have any injury or anything that would explain this, but all of a sudden my sex life was in jeopardy. I was having pain with erections, my dick was shorter by about 1+ inch (not to mention I have put on pounds over the years), the curve was uncomfortable for my wife, and worst of all it seemed like my curve was getting worse. I knew I needed to see someone for this and I ended up seeing 3 urologists in Atlanta.

The first two urologists clearly didn't know how to treat Peyronie's, but the third one did. Eventually, I was put on pentox, vitamin CoQ10, and daily Cialis during the active phase. I was also recommended to use a traction device or penile pump as well every day. Cost was not an issue for me but it really did not fit my schedule so I did not do the traction.

When my curve stabilized, I underwent a penile ultrasound study and I was measured at 45 degree curve upwards. I was offered Xiaflex and several surgery options. With my schedule I could not commit to Xiaflex, and I ultimately decided to undergo surgery. My doc and I had a discussion about doing a plication or an incision and graft (we both agreed a penile implant was out of the question). At first, I told him cut the plaque out and give me some length back. He told me that with the incision procedure the cure was sometimes worse than the problem and I could get worse erections afterwards, and that he prefers the penile plication in my case especially since I already use Viagra.

I also told him I was very worried about length, since I had already lost some length compared to my younger years. For this reason I was nervous about a penile plication. He told me that most patients are not unhappy with the amount of length that they lose, but he could not promise me an exact number. I half jokingly asked him if he could take care of that extra fat above my penis while he was in there, and to my surprise he said he could. He told me that he could remove the fat pad above my penis, and I would be able to see more of my penis afterwards but it would require a second incision that was larger in size.

I decided this was worth it, and I knew this was the right combination of procedures for me and so I underwent the plication procedure and the fat pad removal. The recovery was somewhat painful the first week after the surgery, but the pain dissipated pretty quickly after that. I had a drain in place over my fat pad incision that was removed a few days after the procedure by one of the assistants in the doctor's office.

At this point, my incisions have healed, swelling is gone, and overall my penis looks bigger (!) after the fat pad removal and I am pretty much perfectly straight! I'm very happy I decided to undergo the procedure...and so is my wife! Our sex life is back to our pre-Peyronie's days. The only downside I can think of is I can feel the knots he put in during the plication, but the surgeon warned me about that ahead of time and I can only feel them when I really search for them. I can't speak of Xiaflex since I did not do this option, but for patients who are like me I would say do not be afraid of getting the surgery with the right doctor; the results really made me happy.

Welcome to the forum Marcand,

I am glad to hear that you are satisfied with your procedure.  Plication alone is not a real common surgery anymore, especially in the U.S. but it sounds like you are doing great.

I am curious as to why you took the time to search out the forum after all your problems seem resolved and not when you were void of any real information and wondering what to do?

Who was your surgeon and is he the same man who gave you Pentox, CoQ10, recommended VED etc.?

Thanks for the response, Hawk.

Good question - I found the site after I already had the surgery. I did some initial research about Peyronies Disease prior to my surgery but it was more superficial and I just trusted my doctor's opinion once I found one that I liked. I had an arthroscopic knee surgery a few years ago for a meniscus tear and everything went well, so I wasn't afraid of surgery and trusted the medical system.

Honestly, it wasn't until I was in the initial recovery period after surgery, sitting at home off of work, that I started googling Peyronies Disease in more depth and found this site. At first I was regretting getting the surgery after reading everything on here, but ultimately it turned out very well so I thought I'd post my perspective too.

My surgeon (third doc I saw) was Dr. Nicholas Farber in Atlanta. To answer your question, he was the one who put me on pentox, CoQ10, and recommended the VED and said I'd get the best results by doing all of these. My first urologist put me on nothing and recommended shockwave therapy. My second urologist put me on daily Cialis.

Marcand-

Congrats on your outcome.  I live in Atlanta also.  If it's allowed would you also post the other two docs you went to who you felt were not helpful?
