Pump failure causes?

My peyronies has progressed pretty terribly and I am unable to get an erection firm enough for sex anymore including with cialis/viagra.
A couple of urologists have recommended now an implant so I've begun researching into it. I have some questions:

1) What causes a pump to fail after a few months? Any ideas of why or is that just an unfortunate side effect?
2) What do you think about getting an implant at 30/31? I'm looking at quite a few surgeries then throughout my life, seems quite daunting. Do you know if that will lead to any issues if anything unfortunate such as prostate cancer were to hit me?

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,

Who knows why a pump might fail or why a new football might develop a leak 3 months after you buy it while another football is still going strong after two decades? You can do little to assure the implant you get is not a rare one with some manufactured weakness.  What you can do is improve your chances of a great surgical outcome with the right surgeon.

The main thing I can tell you is that every man on this forum who had an implant wish they had done it sooner, and if you have one by a great, high-volume surgeon, I am confident that you will not be the first one to wish they had delayed it.  None of us can read the future.  You don't know if you will be dead or paralyzed in ten years or whether you will be physically fit 60 years from now.  In the one case, every day, you delay is a struggle that you should not have to experience.  In the other scenario, you could potentially hit some arbitrary wall where you could not have another implant or where you need some abdominal area surgery where a surgeon damaged the reservoir.  In fact, we have one member here who had his reservoir damaged during hernial surgery and who got a revision.  It seems to me that the problem we all face is whether we delay an implant on the fear that if we get one now, we just might run into a future dilemma where we end up sexually impotent.  Guaranteeing our current certain sexual impotence to avoid some theoretical future impotence seems to me to be a bizarre choice. If I have to experience a 10 year period of impotence, I would much rather have it in my 70's or 80's than I would in my 30's.  I would also rather choose potential impotence over certain impotence.  Maybe 40 years from now, they will be selling fully functional designer penises.

Best wishes
PS: I am kind of interested in whether you are in a relationship since your signature line does not say.

Makes total sense-- much better to trade impotence in my 70's for a healthy sex life in my 30's, that's a great point.

And you asked-- I am single.  I unfortunately pushed away my relationship and moved because of this. I'm definitely scared to try and get into a relationship with my level of impotence at the moment.

Hope you don't mind, I formatted your signature line to make it a bit easier to read.

It seems to me that an implant by a great high-volume surgeon is the only thing that will fix both of your issues with one out-patient surgery.

There is some small chance that using a cock-ring or a VED with a retention band for sex might work but that is very problematic unless you are in a solid relationship.  It also does not keep the Peyronies Disease from progressing and here is the truth.  The longer you wait the greater the likelihood that you will lose size and end up with a smaller implant.  If you have lost size I would start now using a VED/Traction to regain all possible size while I was educating myself a bit more and deciding on a surgeon.  Assuming you have insurance or the means to do so I would schedule surgery.

The answers to these questions will guide your decisions
1. Have I lost size and if so how much.
2. Can I fund an implant with insurance or out of pocket? (roughly $25,000)
3. What are my choices of high volume surgeons  with a great record that I can realistically get to (more than 100 implants a year, low infection rate, aggressively size the implant) (personality, accessibility by phone are secondary)

PS: you probably want a Titan implant but that depends some on your size.  A great high volume surgeon that implants an LGX 700 is fine.  I would prefer a surgeon who does both.
