Since one derives from the other, I was wondering which one is the best to take as a supplement?

Please do a forum search by clicking on HOME and then searching. I quote myself,

Citrulline is superior to Arginine for several reasons.

1. It increases plasma levels of citrulline, arginine and ornithine levels. ornithine is also therapeutic to endothelial health.
2. It is more effective than arginine at increasing arginine levels for long periods of time, rather than a spike like arginine supplementation does.
3. It bypasses the liver and is converted to arginine in the kidneys, allowing it to escape enzymatic degradation. It is better used by the body and you do not need as much, whereas you have to take upward of 5 - 10 grams of Arginine to raise blood levels citrulline only needs 1.5 grams or so.

However, citrulline is ACIDIC and will erode your teeth or possibly cause gerd, possibly. It may reversely help gerd, it depends on what your issue is. If you buy the powder form, use a straw. If this bothers you, just buy arginine or take something else such as ginseng or pycnogenol for NO levels. Also remember that insulin lowers NO levels, so change that diet to get out of a state of too much insulin in the body.

Thanks for the info and for replying, NeoV! Next time I'll do a forum search beforehand, my bad!

There is a very informative post above. It influenced me to purchase Citrulline.  The purchased product is very high quality and does not include any additives. No colors, sweeteners, flavors, etc. This is important to me due to other health problems.  Because there is a comment above about Citrulline being acidic, I measured the pH for a prepared doses.  The pH of two different doses: 1500 grams &  3000 grams of powder mixed in 6 ounces of water.  The measured pH is 7.0 for both doses.  So, at least for the Citrulline purchased by me, doses are neutral (not acidic or basic).

This information is not provided to disprove any one or anything. Rather, it is provided to inform forum members there is a very simple product available from a commercial vendor (not me / not mine), if interested.

Would you mind quoting the product name and supplier of this Citrullkine please John.

I currently obtain my Citrulline Mallate from Bulkpowders UK, and find this product to be very effective, although quite unpleasant to drink. I use about 200ml of water over the recommeneded 50ml as at 50ml the concentration is extreme in my opinion. But in a cup of water it is much more bearable.

I purchased some l-citrulline capsules from Amazon. I took the recommended dosage of two 750mg capsules for about a week. Unfortunately I can't tolerate it, caused terrible GERD symptoms. I noticed a little extra pump working out at the gym, I didn't notice any help with erections.

Yeah I must admit, I definitely had some acidic stomach type symptoms from this. I feel that it will be less intense via water, than it would be if i were to take a tablet.

The effect on the penis is interesting. I suffer from turtling a lot, and I feel this supplement counters that quite nicely. However, I do feel like it has changed the way I get erections a little bit. they just feel different. the whole unit feels spongier. at first i thought this was a good thing, but now I'm not so sure. my erections were firmer before i think.

Eric_C,
So sorry for delay in providing requested information. You expressed interest in knowing where I get the product that I use.  I get it from a mail order company based in Henderson, NV.  The company is called and can be located on line this way:  Bulk supplements dot com.

Importantly, I use L-Citruiline.  I do not use Citrulline Malate. The short reason why is because the body converts L-Citrulline  more efficiently into the compounds we want for fixing the problems we discuss in this forum.

The long reason why goes like this:
L-Citrulline is an amino acid. Kidneys convert L-Citrulline into another amino acid called L-arginine and nitric oxide. L-Citrulline is absorbed better by the body than L- arginine.  Amino acids are protein building blocks (e.g., monomers). While their chemical formula and structure indicates they are acids (have carboxyl group), they are not strong acids like  lemon juice , automobile battery, or vinegar.  (If you care, this is because  other atoms will connect to them that determine whether the specific amino acid is acidic, basic, polar, or nonpolar).

Citrulline bound to malate (e.g., Citrulline malate) is organic salt from malic acid. Like above, the kidneys convert citrulline malate  into L-arginine and nitric oxide and (an)other compound(s) due to the "malate.". Malic acid taste is very tart. Malic acid is used to provide a vinegar taste in fancy potato chips. Malic acid upsets some stomachs.

Of the two, citrulline without malate is the more efficient form for the body to use. For every 1 gram of L-citrulline you take, you will need to take 1.75 grams of citrulline malate.

Hi John Doe,

Sorry for the delay too. I've not been coming on the site much at all this year. Thanks for the detailed explanation about Citrulline/Cit. Mal. It's funny what you say about the vinegar, because I also have powdered Acetyl L Carnitine, and that REALLY smells of vinegar. The Cit. Mallate not so much, but it is still pretty unpleasant to drink, I'd like to find an alternative asap.

Was the L-Citrulline you take in liquid format? I may be getting my posts mixed up here? I recall someone I spoke to telling me the liquid format was the most stomach friendly.

I'll take a look at some UK choices first, but if I don't have any luck, I'll try the US vendor you mentioned.

Thanks.

how about between:

- citrulline malate 2:1
- citrulline malate 1:1
- L-citrulline

L-citrulline has the most citrulline by weight, but i've been taking citrulline malate 2:1 and have been happy with the effects

which one is best?

Eric C,
The L-Citrulline that I bought is a very fine, white, powder.  It's mixed with water, juice, or whatever to make drinkable solution.

L-Citrulline is gentle on the stomach.  It is easier on the stomach than Citrulline Malate.
