Someone suggested gotu kola for Peyronies Disease so I thought I'd do a quick literature search.

PMID 20381648 has the following abstract (Centella asiatica is the scientific name for gotu kola):
QuoteMadecassoside (MA) is a major triterpenoid component of Centella asiatica that has a wide range of biological activities, including wound-healing and antioxidative activities. In the present study, we evaluated the therapeutic effect of MA on rat cardiac dysfunction during sepsis induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as well as the possible mechanism. Pretreatment of the neonatal rat cardiomyocytes with MA inhibited LPS-induced TNF-alpha production in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, pretreatment of the rats with MA (20mg/kg, i.g.) significantly inhibited the elevation of plasma TNF-alpha, delayed the fall of mean arterial blood pressure, and attenuated the tachycardia induced by LPS. We further observed that MA prevented the LPS-induced nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB) translocation from the cytoplasm into the nucleus, and inhibited the LPS-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38. These results suggest that MA inhibits LPS-stimulated TNF-alpha production through the blocking of ERK1/2, p38 and NF-kappaB pathways in cardiomyocytes. MA may have cardioprotective effects in LPS-mediated sepsis.

PMID 10890953's ("New innovations in scar management") abstract says:
QuoteCentella asiatica has been documented to aid wound healing in a large number of scientific reports [5,12,21,22,33,34,40]. The most beneficial effect appears to be the stimulation of maturation of the scar by the production of type I collagen [4,19] and the resulting decrease in the inflammatory reaction and myofibroblast production.

So it appears that it has potential.

It has also been used in combination with other herbs to combat ED, so it might beuseful on multiple fronts:

I'm thinking about taking the Ubiquinol, fish oil, and the L-Carnitine complex in the morning, should I take them all with food? Then at lunch take the GPLC to coast me through the rest of the day. Then take another fish oil and the biotin during supper and the trazodone before night.

Does this combo good, I hope they dont conflict with eachother? Can this many supplements cause stomach issues?

The problem here is that I am not a doctor or even a naturopath.  And if I was, I would want to see you in person and treat you as a person.  So really the only thing I can suggest on a forum like this is some general tips, not some sort of detailed plan.

Basically, if you are doing something and it is providing the hoped for result to some degree, that is a good sign.  Also, the labels ON THE SUPPLEMENTS themselves INCLUDE DIRECTIONS.    From there on, what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another so you will need to improvise.  There are VERY FEW conflicts among supplements themselves.  Trazodone is a prescription drug.  You will need to look at the info you get with it to search for potential interactions.  I sincerely doubt you will have any problem.  Stomach upsets are a very individual thing.  There is no way to predict how any given individual will react.  If you have a problem, change your strategy a bit and try again.  You can always start with one sup and gradually add others to see where the problem starts.  If you need someone to hold your hand in this, you will need to find a naturopath and make an appointment.  It is not something that I can do for you and I think you will not find anyone else around here willing to try to do something like that either.  Also, we are ONLY patients sharing what works for us.  NO ONE on this forum can provide you with a plan that is guaranteed to work OR guaranteed NOT to go wrong.  That is something that doctors are for, and if you want that kind of security, you need to be working under the direct guidance of a qualified medical professional, either a doctor or a licensed naturopath.

Thanks George,

Very detailed, insightful explanation as usually. I totally understand what your saying and I don't expect any guarentee about success. I just like your best guess and anything you help me with is greatly appreciated:) I'm just speakin my little young mind.

How long I stay on these supplements and how happy I am with my treatment plan is any bodies best guess. Either way I'll be hangin around for awhile and I'l try to contribute the best I can for the forum.

Taking the carnitine right when you wake up seems to be the recommended way. I usually wake up, take my empty stomach supps (not all for Peyronies Disease: ALCAR, rhodiola, and beta alanine), shower, then make breakfast.

When taking supplements do most people use the recommended dose on the bottle or diffrent dosages? I quit the supplements a couple months ago do to stomach issues but am trying to start up on a new regiment of ALC, CoQ10, L-Arginine. Is the pills or the powder form better to use? I ve been taking the pill form of L-Arginine & ALC thats made by Spring Valley. Its the brand sold at Wal Mart & a lot of drug stores. Anyone know if the Spring Valley brand is good or not?  Sorry for a lot of questions at once time. Thanks in advance.

I tend to use the bottle dosage, but bare in mind that the dose can differ radically between product. Some CoQ10 for instance contains 15mg, others 400mg. Where possible I search through studies performed and see what kind of dose they use. I use tablets as they are more convenient and don't take horrid (l-arginine powder -yuck). I can't comment on the spring valley brand I'm afraid. Hopefully somebody else can though.

There is a new warning out about herbals that is very disturbing -> http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/july-dec10/herbal_10-21.html

I post this because I know a lot of guys here (myself included) are taking herbal supplements.  For all of us, this story should result in caution.

No surprise at all.  Since this "industry" is largely unregulated this type of thing is bound to occur.

Thought I would share this interesting take on Peyronie's treatment  with group. I am taking some of the supplements and topicals. However, I substitute Nattokinase with Serra-peptidase etc.

Chinese Herbs for Peyronie's Disease
By Michael Tierra OMD, AHG founder

Peyronie's disease is characterized by mild to severe curvature of the penis. It is estimate that approximately 1 to 2 men out of 100 are afflicted with this disease in North America with varying statistics in other regions of the world. The cause is not certain but it is believed to be the result of injury which in turn forms plaque or a hard lump on the penis thus it is also known as "Penile Nodulaton Syndrome." It begins with localized inflammation that can occur on any part of the penis where there is erectile tissue.

Symptoms may develop slowly or appear during the course of a day. In severe cases the hardened plaque can reduce flexibility and result in pain by forcing the penis to bend during an erection. Obviously this also makes sexual intercourse difficult, interfering with a couple's physical and emotional relationship and causing a profound lack of self esteem in the man.

Peyronie's can occur at any age. Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia can lead to a weakening of the vasculature of the penis and as a result susceptibility to injury during intercourse can in turn develop into Peyronie's.

Peyronie's is not dissimilar to Dupuytren's contracture, which is a cord-like thickening across the palm of one or both hands causing the 4th and 5th fingers to contract towards the palm. This is fairly common in Caucasian men over the age of 50; however there is no corollary between individuals with Dupuytren's and Peyronie's.

François de la Peyronie, a French surgeon, first described Peyronie's disease in 1743, though the problem was first described in print as early as 1687. Early medical texts commonly classified it as a form of impotence but in recent years it is commonly referred to as erectile dysfunction (ED). Actually while Peyronie's is associated with ED, currently it is medically regarded as only one aspect of the disease since not all cases of ED are Peyronie's.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) classifies it under the category of liver qi stagnation. This can in sequence because blood stagnation and finally transform into systemic phlegm stagnation characterized by lumps and nodules. Another category for some manifestations might be damp cold syndrome caused by spleen/kidney deficiency that descends to the penis where phlegm nodules are formed.
Treatments

1. Salvia Disperse Peyronie's Nodule Decoction (Danshen Sanjie Tang) warms the kidneys, disperses cold, tonifies the spleen, transforms damp, moves blood and opens the collaterals: Salvia 12g, scrophularia 12, sinapis 10, dang gui 10, dioscorea 10, luffa fiber 10, citrus seed 10, raw Rehmannia 10, cooked Rehmannia 10, zedoaria 10 cinnamon bark 6, milletia 20, lonicera stem 30.

For advanced age, impotence, premature ejaculation, add dipsacus, loranthus, cornus, cibotium curculigo; for abdominal distention and persistent desire to urinate, add lindera, akebia and succinum; for diarrhea, aversion to cold, swollen tongue with tooth marks, add atractylodes and poria; for obvious swelling and pain in the penis, add corydalis and melia; for stubborn hardening that does not respond to treatment (usually with a purplish tongue), add sparganum, prunella, persica and carthamus.
90 cases reported, 15 cured, 34 markedly improved, 13 improved, 9 without results (for 19 cases no data was obtained), overall effectiveness was assessed at 69% (The Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, May, 1985.

I was watching Dr.OZ today and he had a segment on some herbal remedies for various things (It was a repeat episode from Febuary). Two of the remedies I think could be benificial for Peyronies forum.

The first one was a Castor oil topical wrap. And the 2nd was an increase blood flow for the brain.

I think it might be worth a shot. Maybe not cure Peyronies Disease but make a big improvment.

Sorry guys I forgot to put the link in for more info:

I've searched the forum and haven't seen too many references to it other than a handful of people taking it with their other supplements, but has anyone given Bromelain a good run?  From what I read it's the best enzyme in regards to stimulating collagenese production, which is the same substance used for xiaflex injections.  Any thoughts? personal experiences?

KAC

I took it for a while.  It seemed to make me a bit less hungry, but otherwise I couldn't tell if it made any difference.  But who knows about any of this?  I finally started having some improvement in my curvature, but I can't tell you if it was the pentox of the VED or something else.  That's part of the grand mystery.

You sure got that Wright.Hard to tell what is doing what.I know the ved keeps things healthy.Seems as some suppliments help also.I happen to think that it is a combination of things ams getting lucky.Bromalin is a suppliment / imgrediant I nepronol.I used it for a while also.

Have no idea if it helps.

It certainly will not hurt to take it.  As an anti inflamatory it has a good reputation.  Make sure you take it on an empty stomach.

George999

I am wondering if anyone out there has tried boswellia?  Life extension has on the market now a 5-LOX inhibitor based on boswellia that blocks a key inflammatory pathway.  I am planning to try it for seasonal allergies, but the possibility that it might just be useful in dealing with Peyronie's pain intrigues me.  There is really no way that I will be able to tell since I no longer have pain from Peyronie's and I am taking so many other things that it will be difficult for me to tell if it is Peyronie's helpful.  But if someone is seriously looking for something to help their pain, this one might be worth giving a shot and reporting back on it.

Quote from: lef.org Researchers found this extract to be 52% more bioavailable compared to standard boswellia extracts.44

It offered superior protection from damage to joint cartilage induced by pro-inflammatory molecules and provided 15% better inhibition of certain pro-inflammatory molecules, including TNF-alpha and MMP3, compared with standard boswellia extracts.44

I have used a product from Standard Process(Medi-Hereb) who's main ingredient is Boswella.  I used it for muscle inflamation per the suggestion of a chiropractor I used to see.  It was ok but very expensive.

I now mostly use Curcurmin(Tumeric) for inflamation. The Life Extention version I find very effective.  I have also used Natures Best and thought that also was good .

When it comes to herbs you need to find a quality source or it is a waste of money.

I have also used Wobenzym N for inflamation and found that to be good in some cases.  It is pretty expensive but it worked for a strained knee.  You need to take this on an empty stomach to be effective.

Dr. Teittlebaum is now endoursing Curamin for muscle pain and inflamation.  It is a cocktail of ingredients which incluedes Boswella and cucurmin among a proprietary blend of other ingredients.  I believe it to be a quality product.

I have used it and found it to be effective but very expensive.  I know of someone that likes it very much for headaches.
Good Luck

I am somehow confused. Curcumin is not the yellow powder used in Indian and most Far East dishes?
If yes, if cooked with the food, still have some effect?
I am asking because here where I am living now is very cheap and it is available in any simple local market ("Pasar")

Yes James,

its the same thing, but the doses are quite different (2–12 grams). it is the major component of what we call curry powder and that is used to give  a yellowisch color to rice etc...
it is controversial though as at high doses it could have side effects..

I was surfing through Amazon tonight and saw an E-book called:

" The Real Natural Cure For Peyronie's!" by Timothy Plum (Kindle Edition - Jan 10, 2012) - Kindle eBook

The reviews are mostly 5 stars but they lack substance and all have similar style talking points.

This makes me very suspicious that it is another oportunist author giving out unproven herbal and nutritional suggestions.
It is based on the work of Dr. Lin.  I have no idea who he is and have never seen his name come up here.

Before I get into too much judgement, I want to see if anyone has read it and cares to comment?

Good Luck

james1947

I think you are right. From 13 reviews, 12 are 5 stars, one is 3.
QuoteI have not read this Kindle book yet but have noticed that all but one of the other reviewers have only reviewed this book and all have rated the book at 5 star.
The reviews seem a bit too good to be true and somehow just don't seem genuine to me. The book may be good but I have my doubts now.

I was thinking to buy it to see what he is about, I am living now in a country that "herbal" and "natural" remedies are much appreciated but I get:

"Dr" Lin has been discussed at length on this forum before.  He IS a "Dr", but NOT a MEDICAL "Dr" as I recall.  He also would seem to be a "promoter" type personality who SELLS all sorts of questionable "cures", mainly related to sexual issues.  I am deeply involved with herbs, supplements and other natural treatments, but have been unimpressed with "Dr" Lin and his, as I perceive them, "snake oil" remedies.  You can check it out yourself at http://www.herballove.com/index.asp  He doesn't impress me.  - George

So I am happy not spending my $9.99 on the book. I am living in the Far East and have not heard of herbal remedy for Peyronie's but I was thinking to give a try. Intersting why they are not selling the book in the Far East (supported by "Dr" Lin, sound Chinese name).

Its not the author, its amazon. Even within the EU they have that kind of restrictions.
I was going to order some a cd player on amazon.de .. and had the same problem.
I then tried on amazon.at and they didnt have the product.
I then contacted the dealer, and he sent it to me directly. He wasnt aware that amazon was blocking another EU country... strange.

As to doctor lin. I agree with george.
go and see for yourself on his homepage.
there are a couple of Peyronies Disease patients that ask questions and by his answers you can see its nothing revolutionary:
http://www.herballove.com/article.asp?Art=99
In this case he recommends "Penisaver and VIPcream"
You can click both products and then there is a tab with ingredients...
The good thing is, they write down exactly what is in both.
OK, it might work on some people, in the drops and pills (combination they call Penisaver) You have herbs, Arginine, vitamins, and DHEA...
And the cream will certainly increase blood flow but i doubt it will penetrate the penis.
But go see for yourself, and check the tab "Ingredients"
I dont think the book would contain more..

Luc
PS: By searching the site for "peyronie" there are 2 other articles that appear.  he adds omega 3 oil in one of them.. (as you see nothing really new)

james1947

I understand. Better I try (for ED) the local herbal drink they call it (translation) "Mans Power". Have here woman walking around every road, village and neighborhood with a big basket on the back full with "remedy drinks" for everything.
Believing is part of the heeling.
I will ask an older woman (not a young one, a young one will propose me the world oldest man remedy) if have something that can help with Peyronie's (I will explain what it is).

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it is all repackaged old info like Vitamine E.  Maybe there are one or two ideas that may be of  help.  But nothing earth shattering.  I am  now even more convinced it lacks credibility.

Why didn't Dr. Lin author or even co-author the book?  Why is he is using Timothy Plum to write it. I would bet it mentions all of Dr. Lin's personal products by name and even suggest you should use them and not anything else if you want the best results.
It suggests you have access to a website if you buy the e-book.  I bet it is the website George listed below. You can visit that for free and you are welcome to all of his products(not for free).

All of the reviewers on Amazon are new reviewers.  Their first reviews are this book.  They then have one or a handfull of other reviews since that time and they are all fluf reviews written in a minute or less.

The one poor review of 3 stars got attacked for questioning the authenticity of the book.  The guy attacking points to the fact that the reviewer has not reviewed other Amazon products.  He attacts the reviewer's credibility with a meaningless statistic.  This guy claims to be a natural remedy researcher.  The only other natural remedy item he has reviewed is  an e-book (reportedly 7 pages long) on how to raise seratonin naturally.
I would say his Amazon review portfolio does not support his credibility in the same way he is attacking this person.

These are all red flags.

It seems like an expensive infomercial to me. I hope nobody got taken.

If Dr. Lin has such a wonderfull approach he will soon be on Dr. OZ.

$9.99 is a lot for an infomercial e-book.

If you have Amazon Prime you can read it for free.

If someone here does read it, please confirm or reject our assumptions.

Well ... I guess I've tried just about everything and this is no exception.  My experience was that it definitely revs up the sex drive side, but I observed no meaningful benefit when it came to Peyronie's.  I really didn't take it for all that long.  After awhile you get tired of dealing with a 20's/30's sex drive in a 60's body.  And the fact that it was proving utterly useless in dealing with Peyronie's didn't help either.  It's effect was not like Viagra or Ciallis which increase erection strength, but rather like an all around sex drive enhancer.  Suddenly, for example, I was on the  verge of wet dreams at night again like I had not experienced since my youth.  So indeed, it DOES work, although with these products, who knows what else might be in them, but assuming it was unadulterated Tonkat Ali, it does work.  Its just not the effect I was looking for which is improvement in health, not simply sexual heat.  - George

james1947

George

I liked your sentense:
QuoteAfter awhile you get tired of dealing with a 20's/30's sex drive in a 60's body.
You can tell me how long you have tacked Tongkat Ali?

In Indonesian language (I can speak, read & write) they are stating that is much more than Viagra, makes a strong erection, strong sex drive and enlarges the penis.
They are also stating there that it has immediate effect but the real effect is after two months.
They are also explaining that the Indonesian product has much bellow the maximum allowed mercury content while the Malaysian one have much more that the allowed content (they don't like each other too much).

As in the Far East many man have small penis (maybe they just think so, they also think that all the white people have very big one) they have good sales.

I will check next week the price, if not too expensive I may give a try. In your opinion, if I give a try, I should stop taking the daily Viagra or Cialis?

I will appreciate your answer.

James,  I only purchased one bottle and I still have part of that bottle left after some years.  I suspect some of the claims about TA are just marketing since TA is seen as a major export product for both Malaysia and Indonesia.  I don't know of any reputable lab that is testing TA for purity at this point and coming from the place it does, an area not known for tight regulation, who knows what might be in it, even apart from heavy metals.  Some of these things have been found to be spiked with pharmaceuticals even.  So while I am convinced that TA is a potent sex drive enhancer and perhaps much more, I, personally, am not sure it is worth the risk and, knowing what I do about the root causes of Peyronie's, am pretty convinced that it has little potential to be of benefit to Peyronie's patients.  ED, of course, is another story, and for the ED aspect it could be very beneficial.  I won't comment on issues like penis size, since I think that is actually more of a cosmetic issue than a functional one.  - George

Thank you for the advise. I will check the manufacturer and make some local research about him, then decide. If it really can help with ED I will give a try.

I bought today Tongkat Ali in from of powder in small plastic bags to dissolve it in hot water and drink like tea.
It is sold for "general health" and is manufactured in Indonesia.

I will give it a trial, my questin is should I stop taking the low dose Cialis or Viagra for intercourse?

Would the increased production of Type I collagen from gotu kola be detrimental to this condition? I recall reading somewhere that Peyronie's involves a problem with too much type III collagen.

If you will scroll down on page 2 of this topic you will find two posts regarding Gotu Kola, back from 2010.
It may give you some answers.

I you will not get some better answere, a small search on the forum main page (search on the right side, top) give many gotu kola related posts, most as I see as part of treatments.

Thanks, I'll do a search. Also, I saw vinpocetine mentioned below. I found a study showing that vinpocetine increased red blood cell deformability even more than pentox: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1610415

james1947

Vinpocetine related articles I find by google:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinpocetine
http://www.raysahelian.com/vinpocetine.html
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-175-VINPOCETINE.aspx?activeIngredientId=175&activeIngredientName=VINPOCETINE

I will post two small quotes, but to understand better and get to some personal conclusion need to read the articles.
QuoteExperiments with this periwinkle extract indicate that it can dilate blood vessels, cross the blood-brain barrier, enhance circulation in the brain, improve oxygen utilization, make red blood cells more pliable, and inhibit aggregation of platelets. It even has antioxidant properties.
QuoteAlthough website advertising claims that "more than a hundred" safety and effectiveness studies have been funded by the Hungarian manufacturer Gedeon Richter, few double-blind controlled clinical studies have been published.

Personally I am not a candidate to take Vinpocetine because it interact with some medications that slow blood clotting include aspirin... and I am taking it daily.

I am 6 weeks on the Tongkat Ali mixture with ginger and brown sugar.
Was not expensive, so I gave a try.
The results? Zero results >:(
I will continue for an other two weeks, just because is tasty.
My private opinion, just good marketing.

I tried Tongkat Ali a while back too. It's said that it boosts testosterone. I'm inclined to believe that it can, but didn't notice anything special when I took it. It was at a time where I was going a bit supplement crazy, whereas now I've cut down to a core of supplements. I can understand people using a wider variety of supplements/herbs/drugs if they are in the active stage though.

I need to get some more CoQ10 soon and I've just seen that exactly the same quantity from the same brand costs around 50% more as soft gels compared to veggie caps, so I'm wondering if there is a good reason for this or can I can just save some money and go for the veggie caps?

Update: I've just checked my last order where I specified the soft gels and seen that they actually supplied me with the cheaper veggie caps but sold at the higher price. This was through Amazon.

Ashtown,

Look at ALL of the ingredient in each product, not just the main ingredient.  Some have cheaper ingredients.    You want to avoid magnesium sterrate in your supplements.    It has been shown to interfere with absortion.  You may also need to be aware of allergens.

Check out the recent post on Co Q10 and Ubiquinol.

Thanks Goodluck, I've just looked at the bottle of veggie caps and yes it does contain magnesium stearate as a vegetable source but I don't have a bottle of the soft gels to see if they also contain the same substance. The product I was looking at is Doctor's Best CoQ10 with BioPerine, which is a black pepper that apparently helps with absorption. Just looking now for a few minutes with Google everything I've seen so far suggests the magnesium stearate is not a problem in such small quantities but I'm certainly no expert.

I find Tongkat Ali works for me. However, if you buy it, be very careful. If it's cheap, there's a reason. There are also a lot of scam merchants selling it. It should be from the Indonesial official supplier Sumatra Pasak Bumi. And 1:200 is the strength you're looking for. It should cost around $60 for around 100 capsules. If it's far cheaper, there will be a reason!

Regarding Sumatra Pasak Bumi, I agree is the best choice as they product don't contains mercury or other metals and the processing is very high quality. Unfortunately is not available in the local market, here in Indonesia.
