Bix,
Thanks for your posts. I have been very interested in your progress. I'm scheduled for surgery on July 21, although I think my surgery is slightly different than yours. Your posts have been an encouragement to me. My uro states that since I have no problem achieving an erection now.... that I should be OK afterwards (based on his experience). He told me that the recovery process and easily be 6-9 months, and to be patient and not rush this after the surgery.

I'm not into the whole Web log thing, but seriously considering documenting my whole story, Peyronies Disease development, treatment, surgery, recovery, etc.

Just read up on the use of VED after surgery - it helps reduce loss of length and ED.

rydf - please listen to this message!

When I buy a new tool, I like to get to work with it right away. But I find that I do better if I read the manual first.

The same is true here.

By making duplicate posts and by posting links to pornography, you are violating the forum rules and decorum. You might get better answers by reading here a while. I have posted an answer to your post in another thread, but many have written on these topics here before.

You seem (I am guessing this) to be in a bit of a panic. You do not need to post here like that. There is time to learn and to get the answers to your questions - but you might find them here by spending a day or two reading. Just my two cents worth.

  Hello People ;
It took me a few times after reading many posts to talk of mine.I am going to see the Urologist next month in my home town ,Nova Scotia Canada .As I read the posts, many of you discussed the curvature.I as well have a bend, but I first noticed lumps just below the head of my penis on both sides. When I have a erection and have intercourse, the pain is incredible.I also have Dupertyns Contractor in my hand and also have fibroids growing on my on my hand as well as my feet.I read that peyronie's is linked to the above.Very rare,I am only 39, but have had 3 surgeries to remove the fibroids but they keep growing back.My index finger is bent towards my palm and may have it cut off ,due to the stiffness and it gets in my way.
I hope someone out there can relate to my troubles because know one seems to know why I have all these problems. Thanks ; Mike

Tim468

mike - welcome.

Sounds terrible. Were I in your shoes, I would focus on common pathways that might help you to treat the problems that you have in a systemic fashion (meaning, to treat your body so that all tissues benefit instead of focusing on just one place). Additionally, you might benefit from stretching out the contracted tissue (certainly before you amputate!!!!!)

http://www.handbiolab.com/

This site has information on the "digit widget" that works on the same principle that the VED or penis traction uses. For me, I worry that traction devices may increase an inflammatory reaction and backfire, so using the least amount of squeezing or crushing tension in any device I use to get a grip on my penis is vital to it not making me worse.

All,
Just wanted to report in. I had my Peyronies Disease surgery this past Monday. After the surgery the doctor told my wife that he was pleased with the surgery and believes we will be pleased with the results. I've actaully had very little pain so far, and am taking it easy this week. I'm to start taking 25 mg of Viagra per day (100 mg tabs divided into 4 pieces) to start/encourage nocternal erections. We are taking the recovery very slowly but looking forward to the results.

I will update my profile in the "Meet the members" thread and keep you all updated. Thanks to all who have been supportive and emailing me.

Hi lwillisjr,

You might want to discus the gentle use of the VED in the post-operative period. I have posted links to the article describing it before - I will look for it now.

Thanks Tim,
Of course this is all new to me, and the next few weeks will tell the real story. Did the surgery work, was there any loss of length, etc.?  I'm taking things VERY slowly at this point, and really want everything to heal properly and take it easy. I'll be happy to use or supplement VED use if it makes sense. One step at a time at this point.

More and more uro's are recommending the VED after prostate surgery to prevent fibrosis and shortening. This is new in that it is applied after Peyronie's repair. They found better ouitcomes, but I do not recall the exact numbers. You can do a google search on the senior author and you will find a second article that addresses this more closely (I think).

Tim468

One article says this (remember, this is reporting results after surgery for severe shortening of the penis using grafts):

"We have performed this procedure on seven patients with moderate erectile dysfunction and severe penile shortening from Peyronie's disease. One patient who did not use the VED gained 1 inch of length while all the others who did use the VED gained 2 inches at 6 months.

All patients reported decreased rigidity with erections, but the VED was effective in inducing erections adequate for intercourse. All patients were satisfied with the regained length achieved by the surgery. Two patients subsequently underwent implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis without difficulty."

Can't find his other reference.

I wish I knew you years ago. I was at Vanderbilt yesterday for my pre op exam and even though the VED has helped there is so much scar tissue on the top of my penis, and in the corpora's, that after implant surgery I will still have lost about 1 inch in length.
It all started with Peronies in 1995 and that lead to penile shrinkage, venous leakage and corporal fibrosis.
There is so much damage from the shots for ED that even the VED can not overcome all of it. But the good thing it has helped or the loss would have been worse. Guys with Peronies need to start VED therapy NOW!!!
Very few doctors know how to treat Peronies and its complications. The average Urologist has now clew. If the Dr. in 1995 had put me on the VED program i believe things would have not gotten this bad.
My surgery is scheduled 8/14 at Vanderbilt. Dr. Milam said to keep up the VED therapy until the day before surgery (it will help). He said be careful not to hurt or bruise myself.
Looking forward to successful surgery so I can have an erection again. Your help and advice has been priceless.
Jackp
PS I will keep up my rant against shots for ED. They cause damage to the penis that you can not overcome.

LWillisjr

Guys,
I couldn't wait....  I have to post and share this with you all. It's been 5 days since my surgery.

"The last 2 days have been a little more painful. But the swelling is starting to subside. Because of the pain and swelling I've had no interest in trying to achieve an erection, but part of me wants to know if everything still works. So my wife and I started to kiss a little passionately this morning....  and YES, It's alive! We had to stop, as it is still a little painful, but things are working! We are really excited and encourged at this point. I'm sure it will be still a week or so before all the pain and swelling are gone, and we can go for a full erection and see what the resultant curve is."

Progress is measured a few inches at a time   ;)

Thanks for the vote of confidence relative VED usage. If only we could convince the urologists around this country and the world that it works, a lot of guys would be in much better shape now.

Just keep up the exercises like your doctor says. After the surgery, you can pick up where you left off after you heal. However, do not try the VED therapy too soon after surgery. Remember our saying: If there is pain or discomfort, stop the VED immediately and wait until whatever is causing the problem to heal.

Keep us up to date on how the surgery turns out for you.

Glad to see you are so excited!!! I had my implant pre op yesterday and looking forward to a successful outcome.
I was reading the pamphlet they gave me and it says for all penile surgery not to have sex for 6 weeks. It also says that spontaneous erections are OK.
I like you will be ready to try it out, but be careful you do not want to undo what the surgeon has done.
My wife was kidding me this morning asking what Motel we are stopping at on the way home from Nashville. I told her you never heard of the back seat. (Can you see two 65+ year olds in the back seat.) There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Just a friendly reminder for you. Do not, repeat do not, get in a hurry to try out the old tool too soon! Somewhere back in the posts of the forum, there have been posts about guys getting erections too soon after surgery and all but ruined the procedure.

I know that you want to resume a normal sex life again, but starting back too soon before complete healing can and will cause you serious problems that you may never recover from and cause permanent damage.

The above is just my considered opinion based on what guys have stated about getting erection too soon after surgery.

Thanks. Believe me we are taking it easy and following the doctors orders exactly. We have a set of instructions outlining what we can/can't do over the next 6-8 weeks. And he said absolutely no penetration until he cleared us to do so.

Interestingly he does want to start encouraging erections, if I can tolerate them. Starting Monday (1 week after the surgery) he wants me on a small dose of Viagra daily to at least encourage nocternal erections. Thanks.

OK, you have your work cut out for you. Yes, the erections would be good for getting the old tool back into shape again. However, you have been through too much to screw up a good thing now, so do be careful.

Have heard of some real bad experiences by guys not following doctor's orders after surgery on penises. Even the implant surgery can be a bad deal if not taken care of properly.

Good luck to you and hang in there, something good will happen for you.

my internal sutures show no sign of dissolving 9 weeks after my op, still prominent & painful & unable to have intercourse although having normal erections
anyone else had the same problem??

LWillisjr

Cantdo,
Since this show as your first post, is it possible to post some additional details of your surgery. There are at least 2 if not more different types of surgical procedures. As an example, if you had a plication type of surgery, my understadning is that these type sutures are permanent. I would think that any internal sutures meant to dissolve would have done so after 2 weeks or so.

I had excision and grafting 2 weeks ago today. Erection pain is almost gone, and I have a post follow up visit with my uro tomorrow. I'm very pleased with the progress so far. Altough my uro did set my exepctation to not expect full recovery for almost 6-9 months.

I have been out for over two weeks and had to postpone the Implant Surgery to 10/30/08
I have gone from a top of the world 65 year old to a 110 year old feeling after the following I have in my list of surgeries.
Murphy's Law has been on my butt too long.
Jackp

As most of you know I was scheduled for my implant at Vanderbilt for
tomorrow.
9/28 I was eating lunch at the local O'Charleys and cut a bit larger
than usual piece of prime rib. With all going on with family and
friends I swallowed before I was ready.
The meat stuck in my esophagus just before entering my stomach. Went
home and tried everything I knew to get it to go one way or another. NO
LUCK.
2:00 in the morning my wife took me to the local ER. They tried twice
to get it out. The second try they put me to sleep. Woke up and still
there.
They transferred me to the main hospital in Memphis and brought in a
Surgeon.
Tuesday about noon they put me to sleep again and tried with a rigid
scope. No Luck. Seems that I am longer than normal, esophagus that is.
They were so aggressive that the doctors collapsed a my left lung and
put my heart into A-Fib. Woke up in recovery with a doctor cutting in
my side to put in a tube, "called him a couple of bad words." Then they
brought in a heart doctor.
Two day of hell in the room with at least six (6) IV's. Then on
Thursday afternoon back to surgery. The Dr. marked my chest that
morning just in case they had to go after it. This time it went through
when they put the tube down. Back to hospital room NPO with a stomach
pump. I was on ice chips until Monday morning. Liquid diet, did not
know so little would make you feel full.
Monday morning I had a Come to Jesus meeting with all the Doctors. And
what to expect.
Tuesday afternoon the surgeon and then the heart dr released me to go
home. While in the hospital I asked about the implant surgery and they
said postpone it for a couple of months. Had a long talk with heart
doctor before leaving the hospital and he assured me that in a couple
of months I could get the implant but first I had to get the A-Fib
fixed.
Went to heart doctor today and the A-fib is much better. Wants me to
wait a couple of weeks an if the meds do not fix the A-fib they will
shock it back.
I've lost 15 pounds. When I came home the next morning I looked in the
mirror and did not see myself. What A Shock.
With heart doctors blessing I have rescheduled the pre op at Vanderbilt
to October 24 and the implant to October 30. I WANT MYSELF BACK BY THE
END OF THE YEAR!
If it has not been one obstacle it has been another but come "Hell or
High Water" I am going to get the implant.

Guys,
I made the following post/update to my log today even though it is a week late. I'm in Europe on business travel and a bit behind on posting. I have to tell you I am really pleased with the results of the surgery so far. Still not "cleared for intercourse" yet. Doc said to expect 6-8 weeks post op for that. So I'm not declaring success until then as that will be the real test. I can tell you that sensation is good, erections are hard, and above all........  ARE STRAIGHT! It's enough to make a grown man cry.   :)

==========================================================================
August 5th, 2008
Today was my 2 week post surgery visit with my doctor. He was very pleased with the progress.  And I seem to have not lost any sensation anywhere, and everything is fully functioning! I had started low doses of Viagra the week before per his instructions, and the first few times was woken up in the middle of the night. The good news was I was getting nocturnal erections; the bad news is they were a little painful at first. All the pain and most of the swelling is now gone. The only swelling that remains is an area around the base. It is about 1 inch in length and all the way around the circumference. He said that this swelling is the result of a hematoma. And that this can happen as a result of the surgery, and that this will absolve over time. I forgot to ask how long though...    He recommended a stretching therapy for the next 4 weeks. This basically includes stretching the penis for about 5 minutes twice a day over the next 4 weeks, and no intercourse yet during this time. My wife and I are very pleased at this point. Other than the swelling from the hematoma, everything seems back to normal, and the good news is erections ARE STRAIGHT......  No more curve!

Epilogue: by Jackp
Went to the heart doctor Wednesday 8/27 for a pre op for a cardio conversion.
They checked my blood (OK) and then went to the exam room. Nurse took by BP and said I don't hear any irregular rhythm. She went and got the EKG and it confirmed that my heart was back in rhythm. Cardio Conversion Cancelled!!!
Dr. came in and we talked. I think he was a glad as myself that the meds worked and my heart was back in rhythm.
My normal BP med is a ACE Inhibitor and he added a Calcium Channel Blocker. I have a history of calcium channel blockers making me tired and weak. He said I could not get off it but he would cut the dose in half. It still wears me out but not quite so bad.
We discussed the upcoming implant 10/30 He said that he was ordering my records from my previous cardio doctor and the last cardio cath 7/07. He said everything was on track and after he got my records he would write the clearance letter. Then he told me to stop taking the warfar in one week before surgery and I could stay off it.
He wants me to come back mid November for a follow up and I will have to ware a monitor for a few days. At that time I hope to come off the calcium channel blockers and the arrhythmia meds.
This is my 4th try with 3 trys having to be postponed. The good thing is that I found this site and my new urologist sent me to Vanderbilt.
Looking forward to having a working penis before new years.

PS Old Man your advice and getting me op the proper track with the VED has been a blessing. It has helped me keep things together. Thanks

I will be going into surgery soon but the doctor told me that i will loose some size since it is not peyronie's disease but congentional, from birth, it curves to the right about 15 degrees i wanted to no what the size loss will b as i am already weary about its size that is 6.5" plzz can anyone help to tell me thank you  :)

nemo

Are you positive you want to have surgery?  15 degrees doesn't sound band - I'd say it within the range of "normal" congenital curvature.  Does it impair your ability to have sex or anything, or are you just unhappy with the physical appearance?  It's certainly your call, but I'd be very reluctant to have surgery unless it caused you physical difficulty.

You will get varied opinions here. Size loss is common among peyronies sufferers that have had it for a year or more. In my case I lost 1.25 inches after about 18 months, that was 1995. Doctor said nothing he could do.
10/06 had a implant scheduled but had to wait a year because of chest pains and heart stents.
10/07 Implant aborted. Surgeon penetrated my urethra. Surgeon said come back in three months and then another 6. 1/08 Had back successful back surgery. After that I started my quest for a doctor that help. I have Low Testesterone, Peyronies w/penile shortening, ED, Venous Leakage and finally corporal fibrosis. Finally after about 3 other urologist, I was refereed to Vanderbilt.
You can read most of the story here on the surgery thread. I now have the implant scheduled for 10/30.
Why do I tell you all this. Penile size and appearance is a personal thing. At 6.5 inches you are about one half to one inch longer than normal mid range.
I started out with 5.5 before peyronies, now about 4.5 with normal girth.
Surgeon did a test stretch to show me about what I would be after surgery. I will be luck to have 4 to 4.5 inches. I told him that is OK so long as I can have an erection again.
Wife has never complained. She told me that women are more interested in girth than length.
I wish you luck with your decision. It is a personal thing that should be approached by you, your spouse, and your doctor. Make sure that the doctor does at least 100 of these surgery's a year.
Luck,
Jackp

Hawk

Zimma,

You can get a very close estimate of the size you will be after surgery by getting an erection and pinching the tissue on the long side until your penis is straight.  This is in fact what the surgery does.  I cinches the long side to draw it up equal to the short side. I think a similar measurement can be obtained by measuring straight from the Base to furthest point from the body without following the curve.

This of course supposes that the surgeon does not over-correct etc.

I would echo the caution that a 15 degree curve is so close to normal that one should be very certain that he wants the potential risks, hassles, and side-effects, of surgery.

And once again thank you

LWillisjr

Zimma,
If you don't mind me asking.... now old are you. I agree with the others giving advice so far. Congenital means you have had this since birth. And a 15 degree bend is almost considered normal. Unless you are having any diffculty, I would NOT recommend surgery. Surgery should only be considered as a last resort and only then to correct problems due to intercourse, pain, etc.

If it works....   don't mess with it.

I knew that question was coming im 19 and have been searchin everywhere for a mature response and found this is the only site...

jackisback

Zimma, not to be rude, but i don't think you sound too serious about this, and i doubt many surgeons would be willing to do this.

Dude, don't worry about your dick, there's nothing wrong with it, you're girlfriend will probably be fine with it. The only reason a girl would have a problem with such a thing would be if she was really immature and thought it was "weird" which would really just translate to her being self-conscious. I'm doubt your girl is like that, and you should go for it. I'm sure once you do it, if you ask her if you should get surgery, she'll think you're crazy. Fact is, most the people at this forum would gladly trade penises with you. But, you probably have heard this before (online) and these words won't provide the comfort intended. But living your life will, so my suggestion is to do that.

Tim468

Dear zimma,

You asked for opinions, so here goes:

You are young, and it appears that you have not yet had intercourse. You have a girlfriend, but no "partner" - I take this to mean that you have not yet gotten naked together yet and that she has not seen your erect penis yet (or why would you be worried about how she might react).

Given that the usual age of first intercourse is younger than 19, it makes me wonder if you have been reluctant to have sex because of self-consciousness over the shape of your penis - is that possible?

So here is my advice.

1) Do not have any surgery on your penis at all. It has the relatively high possibility of making things worse. If the odds of winning the lottery were one in ten instead of one in a billion, I would buy a ticket. That is about the rate of complications you are looking at. Complications include:
  a) infection and necrosis, with loss of tissue, including the entire penis
  b) permanent impotence
  c) pain
  d) formation of nodules and lumps at the surgical site that are disfiguring and gnarly
  e) and our personal favorite, PEYRONIE'S DISEASE!!

2) Speak to your girlfriend NOW about sexuality and desire. By discussing your fears, you may become much more reassured than you would be by trying to imagine what she is thinking. Mind-reading usually does not work IMX.

3) If still unsure, get your ass into therapy to see what it is you are afraid of.

4) If you find a surgeon willing to operate, run the other way and at least get a second opinion.

5) If all this seems mean and you have already surgeon shopped until you found someone willing to operate, all I can say is "good luck!" - you will need it.

Tim468,
I would agree that surgery is not necessary in Zimma's case based on what he has described. However, I have to become a bit of an advocate for surgery for the right reason, for the right patient, done by an experienced doctor. In my case, I'm glad I spent the money on the surgery in stead of the lotto ticket. And I think my odds were better than 1 in 10   ;)

I wanted to let you guys know its been a long while since i posted i have had Peyronies Disease for over 3 years now and had a 90 degree curve i opted to have the 3 PCs pump in-plant I'm 2 weeks post op as of now this in-plant has fixed both the ed and curve the doc told me it was now straight as an arrow the device i had in planted is a newer style gained length and girth is what i was told by the uro. i have a question for anyone that had the pump implant the pump that is in the scrotum is it hard to activate seems to be as hard as a rock and impossible to pump the question i have is. Could this be locked by the uro to prevent me from trying to inflate it before the six weeks? if any can tell me there experienced after an implant i would be very happy for your input so far i'm very pleased with the outcome so far the uro pumped it about half way and snap-ed or broke the plac it could not be remover as it was sitting on a nerve its now straight and hopfully fixed cant wait to try it its been a long to to go without i will keep you all posted on the outcome so far so good. Oh I was also told i would lose the spontaneous feeling well i still get that feeling it just don't erect on its on i can live with that i am still worried about lose ill keep you all informed. i waited on the surgery because i was told that i would only expand in girth and not length then some time after was told about the new expandable device so i went for it. after 2 weeks the pain is getting easier its still uncomfortable to sit with the added pump i was told i should feel normal soon wish me luck and again please give me some feedback on this as I'm afraid it may be hard to activate and deactivate thanks for your input

Jtl:  Unfortunately, I know of no one on the forum that has had implant surgery other than you.

This means your input is of huge importance to other members and all that just surf or lurk on the forum.  Please keep us updated with a log of your progress, your assessment, and the pros and cons of the implant.  Also try to get the exact name and model of your implant.

How many of these has/does your doctor do?

I will keep you updated as I progress.  So far so good.  The biggest fear right now is that it could get infected and have to be removed and wait for 6 months to try again.  I see the Dr next week for the 2nd follow up.  I will ask the info on the implant model.  As far as the uro, he has done hundreds but just a few with Peyronies Disease.  He says he is very pleased so far.  I can't be totally honest until i get this pumped up in 6 weeks.  I have my fingers crossed.  I will give you the weekly update as I go along.  I can tell you the pain is pretty sever.  The 1st week gets better every day so far.

My mother-in-law's last husband had the AMS700 three piece model penile implant done several years before he passed away.

He was rather proud of the results and showed me how the system worked. The pump in his scrotum had a small slide type valve that he could push on or off at will when he wanted to "pump it up" for sex.

After sex, he just simply pushed the valve to the open position and the penis deflated. Sometimes, he had to squeeze the cylinders to reduce the inflation to an acceptable level so it would not show in his pants, etc.

This particular model implant has now been updated with new modifications and that may be the one that you had implanted.

As Hawk says, good luck for you and your new "TOY''

JTL,
Where was your plaque located and the direction of curvature. Was just curios since you referenced that the plaque was "near a nerve". My plaque was on top and also on or near the main nerve bundle that runs down the top of the Penis shaft.

Also were you able to achieve and maintain erections prior to the surgery? My specialist said since I could achieve erections prior to the surgery that he elected to remove the plaque. He gave me the impression that implants were only necessary if erections were not possible, and the implant would be the way to correct this.

Well I was able to get and maintain an erection fine i had an upward bend 90 degrees the pl ac was in the top side just below the head the uro told me that was a dangerous place to remove it That it was sitting above the main nerve. he Gave me a choice the nespec or an implant I had a Doppler and it revealed that the blood flow wasn't up to par but i never had any trouble getting erect I was just unable to have intercourse without causing pain to my partner. I really thought about this for a long long time even chickened out and cancelled 2 times before i decided to give this a try There are allot of risk i had to consider like it it gets infected i may have to have it removed and wait 6 months to try again Having this surgery destroys the ability to ever go back it it doesn't work ill never get an erection with out an implant. I have had a long talk with me wife  she didn't want me to do this for her so she left it up to me. I was tired of feeling like a freak and feeling sorry for myself and had to do one or the other I chose the implant over losing length i was so afraid i would be left with to little. So far I'm pleased with what i see i had this implant don on sept 3rd when i woke up i was half inflated ma by a little more an I was so happy to see it was straight after 1 week i asked the Dr if he could deflate as it was uncomfortable for me and he deflated it for me and so far so good I felt no pain in my lower stomach from the reservoir I did have allot of pain and swelling in the scrotum. As long as i lay-ed on my back i felt no pain at all when i sit or stand the pain came instant its nor about 10 days and i can finally sit and stand with little pain if i stand/sit for a few hours i still have some pain but can deal with it now. He showed me the device before it was installed the reservoir look huge to me ma by like a small coffee cup and silicone cylinder I'm really hoping for the best and cant wait for 6 weeks to pass after that he will inflate and teach me how to use it. I feel this was my best option after hearing mostly negative stuff on nespec This may be the answer i was looking for. I feel more like a man again even it it don't work I'd rather be not able to get errect then have that nasty curve the curve was so bad in the morning it took everything to not urinate on myself with the morning erection.
I see the Dr on Thursday and i will ask him the model number i look up the ams700 and it doesn't expand in length just girth the one i had implanted should expand both ways i believe this to be true as i was halfway inflated after surgery and it seemed longer maby it was the bend that was straight to give it that appearance i will ask the uro what he thinks.

I made a Nesbit Surgery in June 2007 to correct a 45ยบ degree downward congenital curvature of the penis. Unfortunately, since then it has appeared 4 bumps in the penis (where the plications were made) and I started to have erectile dysfunction (due to venous leakage). I also started to have penile pain (even in the flaccid state) and the doctors say that I have herniation of the erectile tissue due to late separation of wound after the Nesbit procedure. It seems that I need to make another surgery to correct the herniation of the tissue (the correction is made through plicacion of the penile tissue).

I would like to know if someone here knows a good doctor that has experience in repairing herniation of the erectile tissue? I am awfully scared of a second surgery and I am willing to travel to the other corner of the world just to have a surgery with an experienced and responsible doctor....

Thank you. I wish you all the best of luck.

I do not know the answer to your question. I hope that you find someone. If you do let us know who that is!
