Title: What do you tell your boss as to why your off work after surgery?
Post by: not9inches on March 09, 2011, 02:02:11 PM
Seriously. I'm about to have surgery and Im thinking to myself...what do i say to my boss. I know it's not really any of his business
but considering my work place...people i work with...etc..they are gonna ask. So....any suggestions?  LOL
I'm thinking i should tell them Im having prostate surgery rather than say Im having my dick operated on!!
Anyone else have this problem?

My secretary asked why I needed time off to go to hospital!  She was being nosey because I did not have any holiday left and asked if I could have it as sick pay.  She pushed and pushed and in the end I broke down in tears and said it was to do with my ability to have children.  I had only just been diagnosed and the Uro said I should wait 6 months.  I booked another appointment with a different uro.  I'm seeing him next Monday.

They can't legally ask you.  You can say it's a hernia...since you'll probably have discomfort and be walking weird.  Nobody wants to probe further when you say the word "hernia" really.

I actually had that surgery about 35 years ago, and you're right, you don't want to know any of the details.

Not9inches:  Read some of the posts here by guys who have had plication surgery.  Most seem to be positive.

I would be reluctant to tell any co-worker or boss that I was "having surgery."  I prefer "I'm having a medical procedure on x-day and I should be back to work on x-day" and let it go at that.  Most people you might mention this to probably care about you, but they are also curious.  I think "medical procedure" invites far fewer follow up questions.  Unless they are involved in paying for it (then HIPAA is in effect) or performing it, then the details are none of their business.

The plication reports I read on this board lead me to believe most guys have them done on Wednesday or Thursday, and they return to work the following Monday.

As I am also thinking about surgery, I know what i am going to say to boss:
"Mens problem.. keyword prostata. small intervention. happy not cancer."

A colleague really had that problem a couple of years ago. The interesting thing was that male colleagues showed lots of compassion, female colleagues were not at all curious to know details.

I told everyone I was having penile reduction surgery.
Seriously.
And then I took the opportunity to educate them about Peyronie's.
Okay, so my boss had a background in psychiatric nursing and I was working on a medical research project where this kind of thing is nothing compared to the stories of death and dying. I am just grateful that I quit working as an escort some 20 years ago, so I didn't have to fill out Workers Compensation claims etc.
I only took two days as really off (having the excision/graft/plication triple-whammy), and I think I worked from home for another day before actually going in to the office.
Were there any repercussions for being so forthright with everyone? Not that I know of. People still hire me, my friends are still my friends. My wife was not happy about it because she felt everyone would then be wondering about our sex life. No-one asked, and no-one indicated that they cared a bit.
Peyronie's won't start getting attention and understanding until we start talking about it.

I agree with Brigthdog. I'm pretty open with it myself. I don't know that had I know about Peyronies Disease would have prevented it. But I feel I would have been better prepared to deal with it.
