Hi

32 - England

History
About a month ago I noticed a curve at the lower base of my penis on the left hand side this resulted in a bend at this point when fully erect. The bend is circa 25 degrees. I have a seen a specialist urologist twice who detailed it is either peyronies or and unspecific inflammatory condition (essentially the same). I have other inflammation problems in my body from old sports injuries which have never healed properly. He advised I adopt the wait and see approach for the first few months and after requesting it myself prescribed Pentox. Currently I am taking Pentox and the over the counter medications mentioned on this forum. The symptoms have NOT appeared to get any worst over the month, however every now and then (varies but generally once a week) I get a burning sensation in the area of bend and my upper leg on that side that lasts for a day or two. My urologist said regular sex would help the condition due to increased blood flow unfortunately about 12 months ago myself and my long term girlfriend broke up so in lieu of sex he said masturbate regularly. He was not keen on a VED due to an erection being "like an iceberg" where most of the work is invisible within the body which a VED does not simulate effectively. Regarding traction (I have previously posted on the traction board) he was not keen due to the lifestyle adjustments but gave the impression it would not do any harm but at the same time would only offer me small if any benefit. Currently I have no erection problems.

Questions

  • Does that burning sensation mean the problem is getting worst at these times?

  • If the burning sensation frequency increases does this mean the problems are speeding up?

  • When I feel nothing in that area is the problem steady and not changing?

  • Currently I have not lost any size or girth when generally does this start to happen?

  • Given I still have an intermittent burning sensation and the symptoms do not appear to have gotten worst; is traction safe at this point (I was looking at the Phallosan Forte)? I noticed on the traction board some members have made their condition worst via traction which to be honest terrifies me.

Mentally I got very upset upon the initial diagnosis but then calmed down a lot; recently however I have struggled with the mental aspects of the disease. Like many people here I was looking forward to a new relationship, having a family and of course a dog! I am struggling to imagine life without that and any answers to the above questions would aid me greatly.

Thanks for your time you will be surprised how much help you really are.

Hi Sid,

There's a lot there and I'm sure a load of views will be posted. My views are :

If you are just a month in and it is Peyronies Disease, you are still in the acute phase where pain and developing symptoms are the norm. You see a wide range of times given for the acute phase. Anywhere between 6 - 18 months from symptomatic onset before entering the chronic stage where the progression of symptoms generally settles down. To your point on size changes. These seem to occur in the acute phase.

I'm not sure about the burning sensation although many people report varying degrees of pain and discomfort in the acute phase. Some people get no pain. I don't think anyone knows the answer to this. It does appear from Forum experience that Pentox and/or Acetyl-L-Carnitine are good for the pain/discomfort. In my own opinion, having had many other types of injury (from sports), I'm not convinced discomfort is necessarily a bad sign or means it is definitely getting worse. Think how many injuries still hurt while they are healing !!

On VED. Many people on here have used it to positive effect. From what I can see, mostly on hourglass symptoms. The view is that it is the 3D mechanical stretching of the shaft/injury/plaque that gives the benefit (and perhaps the forced blood flow increase). This therefore contradicts the point your Uro made on the "body's invisible" work generating an erection as a reason VED doesn't work as a treatment.

Traction seems to be the elected option when people only have curvature rather than curvature and hourglass / dents

The general view is that starting traction / VED should be done ASAP along with oral supplement support of Pentox, CQ10 (Ubiquinol), Acetyl-L-Carnitine and perhaps low dose Cialis 2.5mg / day.

You should read all the traction and VED boards as those techniques need to be done safely and properly or, as you say, you can cause further aggravation of the injury. The informative posts in each board area are the ones in bold at the top of each thread. Then ask further questions once fully informed by the Boards.

I started out on traction and your Uro is right. You cannot wear nearly all traction devices while you are out and about during the day. They are too big cumbersome etc. I did mine at home at night. Bear in mind there is some opinion that the traction devices that use a strap so that you can wear them under your clothes are not able to provide enough traction force and some consider such devices as an additional way of staying in traction when you need to be more active / mobile rather than the main form of traction

Best of luck !

Sidraven;

You seem to be doing pretty much all you can do. Low dose Cialis would definitely help with blood flow and may have other properties to help fight Peyronies.

Re traction and VED. Personally, I would try both. Neither should harm you if you follow the protocols and don't overdo it. There are advocates of both here on the forum and it appears that there at far more people they have helped than hurt.

I don't understand your Uro's objection to VED. When used correctly,  It introduces fresh, oxygen rich arterial blood into the penis.

Hi SID...

Wow I have the exact symptoms especially the burning and dull ache. I've been on the PAV protocol for about 3 weeks but had to stop due to a bout of pneumonia. The anti-biotics killed my gut im slowly trying added the pills again. One thing my Uro suggested is dont bounce around from pill to pill etc. What works for one may not for another. Ex, Give supplements 2 months and see if you feel better. If not wean off and try something else like pelvic floor or acupuncture etc. If you try the whole buffet at once you'll nenver know what works and what doesn't. (happened to me)

VED has one purpose from a Peyronie's standpoint.  That is to prevent/reverse the bunching up of the Tunica which is characteristic of "classic" Peyronie's.  Other 'internal' factors concerning erection notwithstanding.  "Wait and see" is a sign to find another urologist...this rarely goes away on its own.

Typically, Peyronie's is "scarring" which is the body's attempt at healing a perceived or actual injury.  Like stretching to keep flexibility after a sports injury, expanding the Tunica to its natural size or as close as possible is paramount in order to prevent the scarring from simply bunching up firm.  Once it manifests as a dimple and/or curve, it has already started to bunch up and preventing further bunching is as or more important than undoing the initial bunching up.

Consider Magnesium supplementation..not Magnesium Oxide, but Chloride or the other one (slips my mind right now).  Deficiency in Magnesium is almost universally associated with fibrosis/excessive scar formation.

^^^^ I agree with that post.

Also, I was reading just the other day that the reason VED causes the penis to become sort of purple/blue rather than reddish like a normal erection is because the blood being pulled into the outer layers is being drawn from veins rather than arteries.

As we all know, arteries transport oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body, the body pulls the oxygen out and then the veins return the oxygen-poor blood to the heart.

This means that the penis is being filled with oxygen-deprived blood, which calls into question the idea that the blood is providing oxygen to the injured area which is helping with healing.

I'm of the opinion that VED is purely a mechanical therapy device, much like a sports-injury therapy device.

The penis is one of the few body parts that expands in all directions like a balloon.  For normal sports therapy -- joints, tendons, muscles, etc -- there is a linear direction of motion like a knee or a multitude of directions of motion like a shoulder.  But there is no other part of the body I know of that "blows up" to achieve its desired effect. (the lungs perhaps)

A sports injury rehabilitation device must take an injured body part through its entire range of motion to be successful.  The VED is the only thing that will do that for the penis.

Sorry, I don't understand and don't agree with your comment. There are arteries that 'feed' blood to the penis carrying the same oxygen rich blood as to other parts of the body. The oxygen is depleted by the time it gets there.

A side note here, I greatly reduced my hourglassing and dents with traction by hand. I can tell tha VED has a more direct effect on hourglassing, but depending on the angle traction can do quite well. Be careful of course.

Steveo;

To explain, simply, why erections are good for the penis. Whether natural or artificially induced through a VED.

When a man becomes sexually aroused, whether through touch, thought, or sight, the brain sends signals to the arteries that then supply oxygen rich blood to the penis. The veins that normally drain this blood can't keep up with this sudden rush of blood and so the penis swells and becomes erect. The pressure of the corpus swelling against the skin constricts the veins and prevents them from draining. And so an erection is maintained so long as the stimulus continues. Once the stimulus goes, either through orgasm or lack of stimulation, then the penis returns to normal.

So, yes, an erection induced through a VED does supply oxygen rich blood to the penis.

Also, be sure you are getting enough Magnesium in your diet.  If you supplement, the oxide is practically useless.  Citrate is better, and there is another which slips my mind right now as well.

Sid, I take Magnesium Glycinate/Lysinate 200-400mg a day, this will help for pain as Magnesium is a muscle relaxant, magnesium should also ease the burning, I use Doctor's Best 100% Chelated.
You can also get a magnesium spray that you rub into your skin and is absorbed easily by transdermal means.

If you still play sports then a multi-vitamin supplement is a must
