Struggling

Hi. I've been struggling with this for 18 months. Had some improvment in a sideways bend but now distorted significantly and life is.....crap.

Anway, I feel like I am in an active stage again. Been reading all these boards and I think the use it or lose it applies re oxygination. I've started using a voltaren gel to limit inflammation. Does anyone value this? At the very least I'm not doing any harm am I?

I am hopeful of starting a new relationship soon and this is a major barrier as most of you would appreciate.

Thanks for replying.

Voltaren cream is used for inflammations, usually muscles.
As I understand, the way how Voltaren works is by making the place numb.
It have also some component that makes the skin hot and somehow irritated.
Personally, I was not applying Voltaren cream to the penis because the penis skin is very sensitive and I don't want numbness down there.
One more thing, Voltaren pill is used by people as a slipping medication and making people relax while they are under stress.

Can you tell us some more information regarding your Peyronies and the treatment you have done until now?
Have many things that can increase blood flow to the penis so oxygenation will be better (Pentox? VED?)
By the way, active stage can reoccur any time, it happened to me twice.

Does anyone else have experience with use of Voltaren gel on the penis? My primary care doc recommends I try this for ED (his original idea) and my urologist says it's unlikely to help but wouldn't do any harm.

I have arterial blockages due to childhood accidents, an attempted penile bypass which had marginal success, and Peyronies due to scaring from surgery. I suspect I have some fibrosis although nothing showing on tests - my flaccid penis is much more dense that it used to be. I've had some shrinkage, not that much of a bend. Viagra etc gets me erect but I hate taking the stuff (increased heart rate, headache, backache, congestion), and would really like to find a healthier alternative. I've tried L-Arginine, Maca, HGW, many other supplements - all with marginal results.

One surprising thing I've noticed over the years is I'm often able to get an erection after having an injection for an immunization - this coincides with having a flushed feeling in my face. Sometimes Advil seems to help somewhat as well. When I told this to my doc he suggested I try a topical anti inflammatory and prescribed Voltaren gel. I understand there's a risk of skin irritation and numbness which I assume would be temporary. So far I haven't tried it, I'm wondering if there's some greater risk, especially due to my shrinkage and possible fibrosis.

I just got a tube of Diclofenac so I can't really comment on its' effectiveness but there is a clinical study that includes Diclofenac as part of the treatment protocol. There were no negative side effects noted in the study. I tied it last night and I didn't note anything that would concern me.

The cream is designed to penetrate think-skinned areas like the knee and elbow so getting through the thin-skinned area of the penis shouldn't be a challenge.

Thanks so much Matt, I'll be curious to know if it helps. If you come across the study I'd be grateful to check it out. I searched and found nothing on this.

I got this reply on healthtap.com - not terribly enlightening.

Thin Man, you're welcome.

Here's the link to the study I mentioned. I'm currently on this protocol as are a few of the other guys here as well. Check it out:

hey guys i have experience using voltaren gel on my penis. it was perscribed as the first step for treating my minor penile fracture of my superficial dorsal vein. i was going to have the vein removed but got scared and now appear to have some bending and hour glass issues being a 25 year old male its hard to not touch it when your living with ur woman.... anyways i havent noticed alot of difference but when it first happend i was able to lay off it for a few weeks using the gel ice and aspirin and it was looking alot better but prolly reinjured it or irritated it after having sex after all that.

I'm once again in an active phase (just discovered a new scar/plaque) - actually I've been in an active phase for three unbelievable years. I believe it's tied to systemic inflammation that's also causing me to have ulcerative colitis and vitiligo, but that's neither here nor there.

At the first sign of this new plaque, I started back on Pentox (3x day), and am trying Voltaren Gel, after reading that Italian study (though I believe they used a stronger formulation of Diclofenac). I don't believe it will hurt anything and hope springs eternal.

Will let you know if I see any results. At this point the scar hasn't caused pain or bending, but it's right in line with some mild waisting that followed the wake of a plaque three years ago (took about a year for the waisting to show), so I am grimly expecting that in a few weeks/months, I will see some distortion.

Nemo, please let me know how it goes. I just got a tube myself today, it seems common in Japan! Mine is a lower % however.

nemo

Neo, mine is the lower concentration over-the-counter stuff too, and I've been using daily for better than a week. Haven't had any skin irritation or any side effects whatsoever. Of course, I can't tell that it's doing any good either, but it's definitely not irritating the skin.

Some people may be allergic to Voltaren. I bought lower concentration over-the-counter Voltaren for a muscle pain on my lower limb, I got burning skin for 3 hours and red for one day.
In my opinion have to make a very small local test somewhere on the skin (not on the penis) to see if one is allergic to it.

Dang - yes, James, small test patch would be wise. Glad I didn't find out the hard way on my penis!

It seems that every topical gel that I apply directly to the scar results in more inflammation. It seems to ma that the topical agent is making its way to the wound with no problem and irritating it. So in my case, I think a topical verapamil would make its way to the scar with no problem if I can ever get out of this inflammation stage.

james1947

First Jim, have to understand what Voltaren is.
Voltaren is a very powerful pain killer and comes as topical, pills and cups to insert in the anus
Personally, I am allergic to it in any configuration

I see James. I know this may be off topic but what is frustrating in my case and maybe worth looking in to, is that every topical agent that I apply in an attempt to reduce inflammation, only irritates the wound/scar/inflamed area. Even if it is an anti-inflammatory, it seems that the introduction of any foreign substance to the wound only worsens inflammation. This seems to contradict Dr Lue's study that Verapamil does not penetrate the tunica because in my case, EVERYTHING seems to penetrate. Even if I use use a little. I recently got my hands on a corticosteroids cream and applied just a little bit right to the scar on two separate occasions and it hurt bad for a week. I have also tried two old goats, sr cream, absorbine jr., caster oil, among others, all which seem to irritate. Recently I have been applying anti-inflammatory agents everywhere accept the scar area, all around it. So here is my question: If these agents are penetrating my wound so easily, would a topical Verapamil work in my situation? Maybe my wound extends to the outer layers of the tunica? Will I ever be able to apply a topical agent without causing a bunch of inflammation? This is a hard disease to figure out.

Paolo

Jim, be careful with corticosteroids cream, a side effect of which is thinning of the skin – this can make the affected skin more vulnerable to damage; for example, you may bruise more easily  :-\

Just a caution, I don't want you getting worse  :)
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Thanks Paolo. I will definitely keep that in mind.

I am using on my face a cream named "Dermovate"
helping with my very sensitive skin, it may be a cure if applied two times a day
I had in the past a very bad irritation for long time on my right hand as I worked with epoxies, Polyester, Acetone ans so on with no gloves and the "Dermovate" finishes the problem.
It is  Glaxo Smith Kline product

Thanks James. I just tried the corticosteriods cream a couple times on the peyronies scar because I read that it has been used in the treatment of peyronies in the past as an anti-inflammatory. I don't have any skin problems down there. I have the cream for a spot of eczema on my face. It cleared that up fast but only seemed to irritate the peyronies just like every other topical agent I have tried.

james1947

Jim

What is the name/brand of the corticosteriods cream you are using?
I may try it out (for my face skin problems)

Here is a picture of it. It was my nephew's prescription. I applied it once and the eczema was gone the next day. I wish Peyronies was that easy!

How much Voltaren gel are you supposed to use on the penis? I have a tube from an old injury. Most guides say 2-4g but that's for joints with more surface area.

Tychy

Diclofenac works by inhibiting COX-2 and therefore acting directly on the inflammation. It is my go-to medication for inflammation of joints AND soft tissue. It has less side effects than systemic NSAIDs, but some will get in the blood stream.

I had great success during the active painful phase with it and also while having pelvic floor issues, using it on the perineum. There is a high concentration formula OTC available in Germany (Voltaren Forte, 23.2mg/g). You only need to use this twice daily.

Just don't get it on your glans and test beforehand on other tissues (knee pit for example) to check for any allergies.
The numbing is just a benefit you'll get from using it (although pain serves a purpose, especially when using traction or VED. But for chronic pain it absolutely works wonders)

james1947

I am allergic to Voltaren, but I am using sticking patches the the have Voltaren in low concentration on my neck that stuck from time to time.
Voltaren makes miracles. :)

Tychy 23.2 mg / g is a 2.32% concentration. I use a 4% formulation and also got my hands on a 5% one.
