how far surgery shortens penis

Hi

I'm in the UK and have seen a consultant  a couple of months ago. He was pretty reassuring at the time and said the only real options for me were surgical. He said there were two types of operation he would do.

One added an implant from another part of the body and kept the penis length but it carried a fairly high risk of impotence.

The other was much more successful in terms of keeping erectile function but shortened the penis as it involved removing tissue from the healthy side. I was pretty new to all this at the time and didn't really pursue much else with him. He seemed pretty confident it could all be sorted. He didn't check out my erection but I assume he will do further tests when I see him again in 3 months time ( It all started in November last year )

Anyway, as I say he didn't check my erection but I'd estimate my curve is about 45-50 degrees and is in the upward direction. I can still have intercourse, with a bit of faffing around and it works quite well. My erection seems fairly firm to the extent that I can really feel a sort of tension on the bad side where it is trying to stretch out. I get a little discomfort due to this during and after intercourse.

The following questions are on my mind:

If I get the shortening surgery is there a formula to work out how much length I'd lose? As I say I have about a 45-40 deg upward curve.

Is there a particularly well suited form of surgery for people in my position?

For UK residents this one. I have been seen in the NHS but I'd happily go private if it helped. I live in London and I wonder if people feel this would be helpful and if so are there particularly well-regarded surgeons I should try?

Thanks for your help. I'm struggling to take all this in at the moment and though I visited the forum a couple of months back I've just been trying to come to terms with it all since then.

Thank you

Bill

Bill,
A few quick thoughts......  post or send me a message if you have more questions.

First off, make sure you read the following just to help with some background information and what to do:
MUST READ BEFORE YOU POST - Information for new members - Peyronies Society Forums

This describes things you should try BEFORE surgery. Surgery is only a last resort. And since this just started you are in the active phase. You want to wait a MINIMUM of 12-14 months for your Peyronies to stabilize before considering traction. That gives you ample time to try the other therapies first (traction, VED, etc)

Next, read the following as this describes different types of surgeries as I think you may have gotten some of the information confused. And implant is not taken from another part of your body. And the less invasive surgery doesn't remove healthy tissue. It is pinched together with sutures to shorten the long side in line with the shorter side. And not there is not formula to determine amount of shortening.

I think we are confusing the term implant for graft.
Prostatectomy 2004, radiation 2009, currently 70 yrs old
After pills, injections, VED - Dr Eid, Titan 22cm implant 8/7/18

Thanks, gents. Yes I was meaning graft. Sorry. I read the surgery topic ( feeling a bit queasy now  :o )

The doctor I saw said the only treatment he recommended was surgery and that other treatments were ineffective in his opinion. I might try a second opinion privately.

If anyone has suggestions for docs in the London area I'd be grateful. I don't want to take pot luck and would like to make an informed decision if possible.

Thanks

I am suggesting you to read:

You may find the answer regarding doctors. In any case, surgery supposed to be the last, not the first treatment.

Age 71, Peyronies from Jan 2009 following penis fracture during sex. Severe ED.
Lost 2" length and a lot of girth. Late start, still VED, Cialis & Pentox helped. Prostate surgery 2014.
Got amazing support on the forum

Thank you. It would seem I have 2 choices. David Ralph or Suks Minhas. The former doesn't seem very bothered about patients whereas the latter gets a good mention. Looks like I should give Dr Minhas a call.

Thanks

Before you do the graft surgery consider this.  There is little doubt graft surgery WILL leave you shorter. Maybe a little, maybe alot. Now, if you go ahead with the graft, there is a very good chance you will have scar tissue where the graft is placed and another curve may appear. Also, the tool may not work as well as before. I know this first hand, I've been there.  Since surgery is always your last resort, consider the implant and skip the graft.  It is a sure fire fix for the peyronies. You will lose length in both surgeries. So, lose length only once.  I've done both. I lost a full inch with the graft. And if not for spending 6 months conditioning the penis I would have lost more getting the implant. Its been 14 days since Dr Milam implanted the LGX and I have only lost 1/4".  He says I should regain that other 1/4" lost and if I'm lucky and work at it, I may gain back some length lost in the graft surgery.  If I had it all to do over again I would do the implant and skip the graft. Dr Milam says he would have encouraged that if I had came to him first.  But, sadly, I didn't know about him at the time. Again, if your going to lose length only lose it once !

Fireman,
Valid input. I just hate the thought or removing fully functioning corpora chambers, assuming they are fully functioning.

My surgeon purposelywaited 18 months to make sure the Peyronies had stabilized and to minimize any further damage due to the graft surgery. I'm thankful that I only lost about .75" overall, and the grafting surgery worked well for me without going to the next step of an implant. It's been almost 5 years now.

Thanks both of you for your advice. I haven't any ED and I'm a bit worried about relying on a manually operated pump thing TBH. But OTOH I really don't want to lose any more length than I have to. This Peryonies is a real pig!

Is there no way of estimating the length lost with a normal Nesbitt surgery ?

Anyway, I will discuss these options with the Doc on Tuesday

Jorg

Yes there is a formula for that type of surgery, it is based on how much they will have to pull you straight and could be a good bit. I was talking to one Dr. shortly after I came down with Peyronies and I was looking at about two inch's. In my younger days that would have been fine, but you know when you get old everything gets smaller.
If I was you I would get a second and maybe even a third opion. I found out that what the first Dr. had told me was not correct. I needed to wait longer for the Peyronies to run its course. It has been over three years now and after finding one of the best Doctors around where I live, he had me trying all sorts of different things, like the pump at first, a drug test study, stretching and now I am setting up for an implant soon. Make sure you get the best pump for keeping your length, I am pretty sure both will maintain your girth. The AMD implant is the one Not to use in our case. Good Luck

Jorg56:

Please explain more in detail why the AMS implant is NOT RECOMMENDED in this member and your cases.  I am sure there is a valid reason, but other members would be interested to knowing why, etc. Some may be on the borderline of making a decision about which implant they should choose. Thanks for your input.

Keep the faith, something good will happen for you soon with regards to your Peyronies Disease!
