I was on lexapro a few years back to treat my depression and anxiety.  I got off it because it caused me to have a low sex drive about a year ago.  However since Peyronies Disease came into my life, my stress, anxiety, and depression have returned.  I was handling it pretty well, but in the last month or so it's been hard to control.

Does anyone know of particular antidepressants without sexual side effects?  I'm hesitant to get back on lexapro, even though my erections are much improved since I quit smoking and started on L-arginine and pentox. I firmly do believe that stress and deprssion is inflammatory and I need a healthy mind to heal properly I believe.  Let me know anyone with your thoughts.

Lexapro, Celexa and other antidepressants are known to cause sexual disfunction in both men and women.

Talk to your doctor about Wellbutrin.

Guys:

Don't forget about antihistimines and cold meds as well. Some have severe sexual side effects and even can render one temporarily impotent when taking them. I know first hand about these every time I use them for cold, flu and sinus disorders.

Thanks guys,

I just got back from my doctor and he agreed that wellbutrin is the best choice for me, although it can temporarily increase anxiety.  He also wanted me to bump up my vitamin d3 intake from 2000 to 4000iu a day, so hopefully that should help somewhat too.

chefcasey,
The best thing to do to get over depression is to continue with your normal life!! I too having problems with approaching the ladies but beside that i had to find myself some other hobbies to take my mind off of this crap. i take the pills, do the stretching, VED at a set time and when i'm done i move on to other activities. I took antidepression for a while and realize I NEED TO MOVE ON despite of this condition. I'm 29 and i'm a chef too so i can relate alot to your feelings. Best wishes to you.

wellbutrin increases sex drive btw...it's the main thing they give for low libido now.

I hate to disagree but I am familiar with Wellbutrin. And following is straight from their web site on side effects.

•Anxiety
•A decreased sex drive (libido)
•Impotence (erectile dysfunction or ED) (see Wellbutrin Sexual Side Effects)
Developed peyronies 2007 - 70 degree dorsal curve

Hmm... I was prescribed it for low libido and was told this is now the "standard" and "accepted" rx for people with low libido by a sexual medicine doctor / urologist.  I didn't stay on it long enough to find out due to headaches.

There are some articles about this...

I am sure it can decrease sex drive & orgasm too... paxil was horrible w/ that.  You literally could not have an orgasm no matter what you did.

Welbutrin works w/ dopamine more than serotonin... SSRIs are awful for side effects in my experience.  So, that's why people like this one in certain cases.

I'm sure there are people out there who get negative sexual side effects too - so they have to list it.  But there are a lot of studies showing it is beneficial for this.

Each antidepressant works differently from person to person. Pretty much all of them list increased anxiety, decreased libido and impotence as possible side effects. The key word in that previous sentence is 'possible' as most people will not experience each side effect, or may experience it temporarily. Speaking with different healthcare providers the consensus was that taking Wellbutrin results in decreased libido and impotence less often than many of the others. On the other hand, increased anxiety is something that is more commonly attributed to Wellbutrin but once again, the effect is different for each individual.

I can tell you from personal experience how it affected me directly. I took Wellbutrin XL for several years and had no problems whatsoever with libido, in fact I had a great sex life while on it. I did deal with some anxiety and sleeping problems while on Wellbutrin though. When I got Peyronies Disease the anxiety and sleeping problems went through the roof so I had to switch to something else. I switched to Pristiq in October which was recommended by a physician and a psychiatrist as a new and improved option with limited effect on libido, and anxiety. I have been sleeping better than ever the past couple months but that could also be due to many other changes I made in my life in this desperate attempt to cope with Peyronies Disease. The psychiatrist said that sometimes you can benefit from a change in antidepressant so it's not that Pristiq is better than Wellbutrin it's just that change made sense for me at that particular time.

I still have a lot of really bad days and they are driven by pain. When I feel any kind of pain it's a reminder that the Peyronies Disease is in the acute stage and possibly causing more damage, and for those days I don't think there's an antidepressant out there that can help me. However, I've been feeling better the past few days as I feel like I will be exiting this acute stage soon, I'm not sure why, but that's how I feel.

I'm 27 years, i have peyronie, and i have bipolar disorder.
I assume psicodrugs since 8 years ago. I've assumed a lot.
Each psicodrug can provoke negative sexual effects: antidepressants,anxiolitics,antipsicotics...ecc ecc...all.
In my experience the best antidepressant is Wellbutrin (i've assumed 5-6 in the years)...
It didn't provoke libido effects in my experience. Sometimes some less strong erection but with cialis or levitra there aren't problems.
The others antidepressants in my experience have provoked negative sexual effects.

YMENOW

Just make certain that when you change anti-depressants that you make sure you follow the instructions on the label.  I think my tinnitus was caused by a quick change from Paxil to Wellbutrin.

My doctor didn't advise me that I should be weaned off one and then go on another......
