Moderator: is there an acronym thread? There are so many abbreviations here its hard to remember what everything means! thanks..

Hawk

elysianfields,

You make an excellent point.  We did have a member working on that but life must have intervened as it has a way of doing.

I would be nice if someone would take this on.  If we got a even a skeleton built, I am sure filling it out would not be too difficult and it would become a work in progress.

PS: I will likely move this topic to the suggestion board in a few days.

Might just be easier if we start a thread, everyone posts all the acronyms they know/use, then the original poster copies and condenses it into one post. Delete all the other posts and lock/sticky the thread.

Will probably get the job done faster than if one person has to do it all by themselves.
This is an emotionally destructive condition, we all have it, let's be nice to each other.

It will be very usefull for new members

Guys and Gals,

I am still looking for much need help and for those that are willing to give a little to others that are fighting this same battle.  Especially those that are newly diagnosed and in a panic trying to make sense of it all.

For years I have tried to get someone to make a list of acronyms and abbreviations from ED to PAV and VED, but no one has stepped up and followed through.  We would eventually post this list in our Forum Resource Library or our Web Page.

We also need some help with definitions in general.  If you look here you will see my first efforts still waiting for someone to pitch in and help.  http://www.peyroniessociety.org/glossary.htm

These could be 2 different projects or they could be combined.  Whoever steps up can of course get others to give input and critique their work in progress.  Speed is not the requirement.  Starting the journey and making a commitment to eventually get to the destination.

OK, I am getting pretty sick that no one out of our 4000 members that use this forum are willing to work on this project so I will start it right here and others can post additions or changes and I will cut and paste them.  Maybe we should charge a fee of 3 acronyms to keep membership in the forum.  If nothing else just list some acronyms and let others work on the brief definition.

ED - Erectile Dysfunction - A condition where the penis either cannot gain or maintain an erection sufficient for normal intercourse.  If has many possible causes.  It is a somewhat common symptom and possibly a cause of Peyronies Disease.

ESWT - Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy - A treatment where ultrasound shock waves bombard an area of tendonitis, frozen shoulder, painful heel, and in some instances Peyronies Disease.  This is not FDA approved in the U.S. ESWT has never grown to the status of a mainstream treatment for Peyronies Disease.

Pentox - Is short for the prescription drug pentoxifylline.  It is sold under the trademark name of TRENTAL® and used off label for the treatment of Peyronies Disease.  It is considered one of the newer weapons in the arsenal against this disease and many urologist are not familiar with its use.

VED - Vacuum Erection Device - A cylinder device that sides over the penis. It has a mechanism for drawing the air out of the cylinder and forming a vacuum around the penis to draw blood into the penis causing an erection.  It has been used both prior to intercourse to compensate for ED and as a treatment for Peyronies Disease although the techniques are are different.

I would be glad to volonteer, and I had allready thoughts about it. specially, as english is not my mother tongue, I had to look up many things at the beginning.
Here are my thoughts:
Good beginning hawk, but:
in this format it will be - difficult to maintain, modify, update and search.
so I thought of following:

Create a little hack with:
one extra mysql table

INPUT:
one page for input: (permission to members with xxx posts)
approval: Moderators would have to approve new inputs

View:
here are several possibilities
one page for view: (permission to all registered members or ALL including guests) it would be a list, like the one you posted.

Now there could be some hacks to the board with extra features:
the abbreviation could be automatically linked to the list page, with a jumpmark to the entry. (Linking works like the replacement feature already included in the board: ex: when you type a P and a D you get: Peyronies Disease

some extra features not to difficult to implement:
- on mouseover or onclick a little noninvasive popup OR tooltip giving the explanation.
ideal would be:
on mouseover tooltip with the full wording. Example if you mouseover ED there would be a tooltipp apearing saying Erectile Dysfunction.
AND/OR
if you click on the ED there would be a little popup window with content:
QuoteED - Erectile Dysfunction - A condition where the penis either cannot gain or maintain an erection sufficient for normal intercourse.  If has many possible causes.  It is a somewhat common symptom and possibly a cause of Peyronies Disease.

we would need to discuss the form of the window as complexity could involve more traffic.
1kb per user per session (not page)  for a simple classic popup.
35kb per user per session for a facebook like layover.

but all that is future. (also a search function but would be step 2)

For the moment important is the input of the list.
What I will try to do as first step is:
Get myself a copy of SMF 1.1.16
create an extra table and make an input/output page.
Send you the file and install instruction. Very transparent, so you can see at one glance that there is no malicious code.
It will NOT be integrated to the forum, so there will be an extra url where you can test input/output.
I will post it also on the SMF hack page, as I seen they test all hacks for stability and drawbacks.

Timeframe:
I am quite busy at the moment, but I think I should get something running within a week or 2. (make it 2 as i have to go to France for the french elections next week)

Hawk,
I posted about a week ago and said I would be willing to do this. I've started a document and will post it somehow so we can review it.

Ok, I looked into smf. Quite easy programming.
They have a glossary out of the box, as an addon for free, looks quite nice, an implementation here:

http://forum.pctweakr.com/index.php?action=glossary&sa=alphabetic
or here
http://www.40konline.com/index.php?action=glossary

but it only works with > 2.0 and not 1.xx like here. To bad.
But a little modification with similar layout should be easy to write...
I will see what can be done.

First to Les,

Les I apologize, I did not see your post and missed it where ever it is.  Sorry about that. I truly appreciate your offer to work on that list.  feel free to take over this topic if you want members to post suggestions.  Luciano and I will take our conversation elsewhere.

To Luciano,

I will upgrade to 2.x in the next week or so.  Strangely even some of the support staff at Simplemachines.org run 1.x forums so I was a little Leary but we only have a few mods actually running on the forum and we are using a default theme so I think we will be fine.  You are obviously way past me in php scripting language.  I am not a programmer but an ex-network administrator losing skills fast.  I get nervous just getting into the file structure of the server with Filezilla or cpanel because since the forum has run well for years I have lost practice.  If I create an error I have to research my way out of it.

I do want to avoid a lot of avoidable band width use simple for cost since I have always funded this out of my pocket but if we can make a real improvement doing as you suggest then I think we should probably do it.

Well what I suggest, is..
I will get a copy of 2.x and install on my dev server on localhost.
I will test the modification for usability and bandwith...
and if it is difficult or not to install.

vbulletin used  to have a similar add-on that was not really usable because it slowed down a lot.

After I run the tests, we will see what the figures are... will be probably a difference of xx kb per user..
As you know what your traffic is.. we could roughly calculate what the overhead will be.
Then you can decide.. do it or not.

Anyway my suggestion will be: upgrade first. then wait a week or 2 before you install anything so you limit the amount of potential errors.

If you need any help with upgrade, dont hesitate.

I'll PM you my email.

OK,
Back on topic..........  regarding a list of acronyms. Following is what I have so far. I will add html tags to bold certain things and make this easier to read. Right now interested if anyone has other suggestions for anything I have missed.

BPH - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. A common condition as men get older resulting in enlargement
of the prostate gland. Prostate gland enlargement can cause bothersome urinary symptoms. Untreated prostate gland enlargement can block the flow of urine out of the bladder and can cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems.

TRT _ Testosterone Replacement Therapy.  TRT is the use of hormone replacement for men incapable of producing sufficient amounts of this hormone themselves. This is a medical condition, and the medicine used to treat this ailment is testosterone and similar androgenic compounds. Levels are monitored to maintain patients in the mid-range used by the reference laboratory available to their physician. Injectable formulations are available as are gel forms.

PAV - An abbreviation for Pentox, Arginine, Viagra.  This cocktail or trio of substances has recently been used as an oral treatment for Peyronie's Disease with some promising results. Other forms of Arginine like L'Arginine can be substituted. And PDE5 inhibitors like Cialis and Levitra can be substituted for Viagra.

ED - Erectile Dysfunction - A condition where the penis either cannot gain or maintain an erection
sufficient for normal intercourse.  It has many possible causes.  It is a somewhat common symptom
and a possible cause of Peyronie's Disease.

PTT - Penile Traction Therapy. PTT has traditionally been implemented to increase penile length
but has recently been investigated for reducing the curvature associated with Peyronie's disease.
There are several manufacturers of penile extension devices. These devices are designed to apply a pull or tension on the penis. Penile extenders usually require the penis being in traction for several hours a day for several months for any noticable improvement.

VI - Verapimil Injection is a treatment approach that has demonstrated mixed results in a number
of published studies. This treatment involves the injection of Varapamil directly into Peyronie's
plaques (scar tissue nodules or bands). Varapamil is a type of calcium channel blocker and is used
for collagen degradation to reduce the plaaue and scarring associated with Peyronie's Disease.

URO - Urologist. One who is trained in the medical and surgical specialty that focuses on the
urinary tracts of males and females. Urologists and are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage
patients with with bladder or other urological disorders. Some urologists specialize specfically
in the treatment of Peyronie's Disease.

VED - A plastic cylinder that is closed on one end and with some type of seal around the open end. The penis is inserted through the hole in the seal.  The cylinder is press against the body and a vacuum is created with either a manual hand pump or a small battery operated pump.  The vacuum draws blood into the penis causing an erection.  A retaining band can be transferred from the VED to the penis to maintain the erection after the VED is removed. (the retaining band is usually not used for Peyronies Disease use)

HOT - Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room. Hyperbaric
oxygen therapy is used for the treatment of conditions including serious infections and wounds
that won't heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. The treatment elevates the amount of
osygen in your blood then you normally would breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. Your
blood carries this oxygen throughout your body, stimulating the release of substances called
growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.

DMSO - Dimethyl Sulfoxide is a Colorless liquid used to dissolve or extract organic compounds.
Because DMSO increases the rate of absorption of some compounds through organic tissues, including skin, it can be used as a drug delivery system. It is frequently compounded with antifungal medications, enabling them to penetrate not just skin but also toe and fingernails.

TA - The Tunica Albuginea is the fibrous envelope of the corpora cavernosa penis. It is white in
color and consists of approximately 5% elastin and 95% collagen. The tunica albuginea is directly
involved in maintaining an erection; that is due to Buck's fascia constricting the deep dorsal
vein of the penis, preventing blood from leaving and thus sustaining the erect state.

CC - The corpus Cavernosum is one of a pair of sponge-like regions of erectile tissue which
contain most of the blood in the penis during penile erection. The two corpora cavernosa lie along
the penis shaft, from the pubic bones to the head of the penis, where they join.

PDE5 Inhibitors - A phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors refers to a group of drugs are used in the
treatment of erectile dysfunction, and were the first effective oral treatment available for the
condition. PDE5 inhibitors help to sustain an erection by keeping inhibiting the the process that
causes an erection to diminish. And is why physical stimulation is still required to cause an
erection. Common PDE5 inhibitors include Viagra, Livitra, and Cialis.

Peyronie's Disease - Sometimes called Induratio Penis Plastica (IPP), is a change in normal
structures of the penis, transforming functional portions of penile tissue into scar tissue.
This is a wound healing process gone awry somewhat like keloids. Once started, the process spreads across undamaged tissue, turning it to scar tissue.

Les, here are 2:

BPFL (bone pressed flaccid length) - A standardized method to measure penis length used to chart progress. Ruler in pressed against pubic bone and flaccid penis is stretched straight out from the body at a 90 degree angle.

TGFB1 - Transforming growth factor, beta 1 -This gene encodes a member of the TGFB family of cytokines, that regulate proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, migration, and other functions in many cell types. Many cells have TGFB receptors. This protein positively and negatively regulates many growth factors.

Guys, (even newbies), jump in and either post or pm lwillisjr with words or acronyms we need put in our glossary. Thanks to the upgrade Luciano is working on we will have that glossary and much more within a couple days.  All you will have to do is mouse over a word in a post to get the definition.

Thanks to both Les and Luc

Nice, All added, I think we would need also Xiaflex and Xiapex
Not sure about the definitions. Xiapex being I think the same product, but used for dupuytrens.
Also a definition of dupuytrens and the one for the leg (cant remember the name).

Also Ubiquinol, Ubiquinone, CoQ10, Q10

The thing is, try to keep the definitions short. as some of them will apear in the post as tooltips .
Those 2 by hawk are perfect in length. Some need to be longer, but we can make it so that they dont appear as tooltipps.

Up to now, everything seems perfect.
