Thanks WhatNext81, I already consume baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) on a regular basis, and feel better for it  :)

Do you feel it has helped with inflammation in general? How do you feel it has benefited you?

QuoteA daily dose of baking soda may help reduce the destructive inflammation of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, scientists say.
Someone knows what is "a daily dose"?
Maybe I miss it while reading the article.

James:

The dosage that my grand mother (Indian medicine man's daughter) was one teaspoon of baking soda in not less than 4 ounces of water. However, one must regulate the amount of water so that the effect of the bicarbonate still has enough effect for its intended purpose. This dosage could be taken twice a day with 8 or more hours time lapsed between dosages. BTW, it does wonders for acid indigestion.

This medical usage of baking soda was a standard item in the medical cabinet back on our farm. The time frame was in the 1930s on up to the 1960s.

I am glad to see that someone, somewhere has taken the time to do some testing and publishing the results.

PS: Just a note of explanation to those members who are aware that I post quite a number of what may be called "off the wall" items. Remember that I grew up in a rural farming area of the Deep South in the USA. The Great Depression was in full swing during this time and finances were very slim or none for most of the population. Doctors were non existent or none at all that had a good medical background.
Age 92. Peyronies Disease at age 24, Peyronies Disease after
stage four radical prostatectomy in 1995, Heart surgery 2004 with three bypasses/three stents.
Three more stents in 2016. Hiatal hernia surgery 2017 with 1/3 stomach reduction. Many other surgeries too.

Perfect post Old Man, thank you.
By the way people often get prescribed Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) assuming that they have 'too much' stomach acid, in the majority of cases IMO it is 'too little' stomach acid that causes problems, that's what my GP prescribed for me and I have to say it made me feel really crap all the time. I knew by my own gut instinct that I wasn't producing enough stomach acid, that in my case caused the indigestion  :(
Good digestion is the building blocks to good health no doubt about it, as we age it gets compromised.

For those who think they have low stomach acid I can also personally vouch for Betaine HCL with Pepsin.

Here is a great study on low stomach acid and disease = Schierling Chiropractic, LLC BLOG - DR. RUSSELL SCHIERLING

It's definitely helping with inflammation for sure, for one thing I suffered when exercising from lactic acid build up, now after baking soda I can exercise for longer without fatigue, if it is doing that then I will continue to take both morning and evening  :)

All very interesting stuff guys. The study is fairly new. I wouldn't have stumbled upon it had I not been searching for "Augusta" for other reasons.

Old Man-I believe all non emergency health issues can be treated with things already on our shelves and natural remidies. It's difficult in finding the root causes in many cases. So, science is still a great thing. My grandmother went through the Great Depression as well. Those on the farms were lucky. The stories are quite amazing.

Paul-Very interesting! I'm glad you reap some benefits from this. It's interesting that the liver produces the enzymes for breaking down food and then is stored in the gallbladder. It is then released when we eat to aide in digestion. Now, I wonder if the gut bacteria is lacking/off balance and how the domino effect takes place? Long term inflammation? I'm just spitballing.

Either way, interesting stuff!

Note about stomach acid inhibitors:

Recently I developed a hiatal hernia with severe stomach acid reflux. My gastro doc put me on 40 mg of omeprazole before breakfast each morning. There is a waiting time before eating of at least 30 minutes to allow the stomach to react to the medicine.

It has done a great job of controlling my gastric problem. I still take the med even after the hernia was repaired. About 1/3 of my stomach was pulled above the diaphragm and was tucked around the esophagus to finish the repair.

So, the brand name that is highly touted is Nexium, but the generic works equally well and the cost is much less.
